Hi Ian, I understand that the demand for the DM6 is driven by industry, as they often have no choice but to replace their existing hardware with the same hardware if it fails.

I was talking more from the hobbyist point of view. For example, a member from this forum could buy mopar's quad 1GHz Tesro that he has for sale on eBay and then buy the DM3 and VBOB with DM5 fitted from you and still have some to spare, when compared to your asking price for the DM6!

I understand that this is just due to scarcity, but it is rather crazy if you think about it, when you compare the original difference in cost of the hardware in question according to SGI's 2006 price list.

Nick.

Very true, though mopar's quad-1GHz system is a damn good deal anyway. :D As always though, this stuff boils down to the whacko world of supply and demand. Why sell something cheap when someone else will happily buy it for a lot more? That's just throwing money away. The market sorts itself out in time, but it'll never behave to the whims of hobbyists, for obvious reasons. In terms of differentials, it's a lot less crazy than works of art.

Agreed.

A little bit off topic, I've managed to secure a rather rare piece of Sun equipment in the form of an XVR-4000, Have you had any experience with this card?

Alas no, I know almost nothing about SUN stuff, even though I do have a bunch of SUN systems I keep meaning to sell off when I can find the time.
