SI 3D 3.9.2 Install and licensing

Unread postby pentium » Sat Dec 26, 2009 6:27 pm

Last time I was in vancouver I picked up a pile of mixed cd's (literally a dollar a dozen) and one of the discs was a (backup) copy of SoftImage 3D 3.9.2.
I got around to trying it out today and after a bit of work (it's pretty beat up) I got it to mount on my O2 however after starting the setup it became immediately clear it was not going to behave.
I can't setup the licensing stuff as I'm missing cdinst.dat.
Regardless, I tried running the actual software installer and it went fine presumably and now I have a new toolchest option marked "SOFTIMAGE Products" (is there a way I can shorten that so the toolchest is not stretched so much?) however the only thing that actually runs is the User Tools, Setup Help (though its missing the .htm file), Setup, and Dialog Editor. Everything else does a whole pile o nothing. I'm assuming this is because the software licensing is not setup correctly but I don't know.
Is there actually a way to fix my issues here or is it just better to remove the software and carry on using Blender/whatever else I can find?

even if you could setup the lic stuff you'd still need a lic.
however i don't remember the contents of the cd but even if the dat is missing you should be able to extract the files.

I might have a "temporary" one. I got a lot of text files. I think I saved it someplace.
Even so, where would a license file go? /var/flexlm and be merged with the existing license.dat file?

it doesn't matter where the lic is located and you can't merge it because of the separate daemon line.
extract the si lic stuff somewhere, go there and execute

Code: Select all

./lmgrd -c /path/to/your/lic

be sure that lic does contain si stuff only and the correct port and daemon

"lmgrd" is the license manager daemon, "man lmgrd" for more info.

I don't think lmgrd is even installed. I can't even find a manual page for it.

lmgrd should be in the license-eoe software system or (use to be) downloadable from Globetrotter software: http://www.globes.com/support/fnp_utili ... wnload.htm

Unfortunately there are no eoe files on the disc. The installer is essentially just a graphical installation script that does not require swmgr at any time.
I think it's more like "I'm used to swmgr and now that I have to install something that does no use it, I have no idea what to do".

There are two licensing systems common on SGI: FlexLM and NetLS. Lmgrd is from FlexLM, which should be on your IRIX 6.5.x disks. Open up swmgr or inst and check to see if you can find the lmgrd file anywhere.

The Insight book on licensing might be helpful, too.

If lmgrd is one of my irix discs, I'm going to need to know which one specifically as I'm not going to feed all my discs through the system again.

If you have a license file (say, "softimage.lic"), put it in /usr/Softimage/Soft3D_3.9.2 (assuming that's where you installed Soft) and then open ".softimage392" in that directory and scroll down to the "setenv LM_LICENSE_FILE" line. Add "$SI_LOCATION/softimage.lic" to that line, save the file, and you should be good to go.

Might be quicker than another 10 page discussion. :D

Or you could try looking at the IRIX CD contents listing that *should* be on your hard drive. Try the following url into your browser:

Code: Select all

  file:///var/www/htdocs/WhatsNew/install/cds_frame.html
<that's 6.5.30, if you have an older version of IRIX and it doesn't open, poke around in /var/www/htdocs/ >.
