Graphics Card for Digital Personal Workstation

Unread postby thunderbird32 » Mon Mar 26, 2018 7:49 am

Can anyone recommend a graphics card for my Digital Personal Workstation? I'm looking for something that's compatible with OpenVMS, Tru64, and Linux/BSD. The card I've got in it now (a Powerstorm 4D of some type) doesn't have any support in Linux or VMS.

Traditionally the ATI 7500 PCI card was the one to get, but it has to have DEC specific firmware on it.
They used to come up on eBay now and again and resellers have them but they're not cheap.

I have one of here - if you are interested in buying one contact me via PM.

Regards, Mark.

OpenVMS is most restrictive in terms of graphics support, followed by Tru64. So its probably best to start with the graphics cards mentioned in OpenVMS docs, then eliminate those that wont run on PWS (e.g. Oxygen VX1 would support all those OSes probably but is EV6 and higher only from what I've read). Then for the remaining cards, check for Tru64 on PWS, Linux on PWS etc. For example, TGA2 (PowerStorm 3D30/4D40) are out because although they do work on OpenVMS/Tru64, they are still not supported in Linux.

In the end you are probably left with just:
- ATI Radeon 7500 (though there are many conflicting reports about it working in PWS, so perhaps SRM version and PWS hardware revision matter)
- ELSA Gloria Synergy.

Here is a useful list of Alpha graphics card part numbers:

And this is an old compatibility list built from users' experiences of trying various cards in different systems. If you have a card to hand, I'd still try it before just accepting what it says here.

Thanks for all the information. After looking around it seems like the general consensus is that the ELSA cards are super slow. That's unfortunate as there are a bunch on eBay at reasonable prices.

From looking around it seems they are pretty reliable with "MiataGL" systems, which I believe mine is (mine has USB ports, which it looks like is the easy way to tell the difference). The big downside is they're super expensive (+$300). That's more than I paid for the entire system!

Normally, I would recommend the Oxygen 2D accelerator card but that seems only to work with EV6 and yours is EV5.

There is a Radeon 7000 as well, but I don't know if that works with your processor. I think it is 32MB and has 3D support.

The ELSA and PowerStorm apparently have some limitations when it comes to modern screens.

I don't know about that, I picked up a generic 7500 pci from ebay and works fine in my ds10l

Thanks for the information everybody. I think what I'm going to do is buy urbancamo's card. Looks like a good deal to me, and the 7500 should serve all my needs.

May as well, PCI 7500s aren't nearly as common since by the time the 7500 came out AGP was the standard. I paid about $35 for my pci 7500 though.

I can confirm that the ELSA card works in every OS you can run.
