Optical storage lasts 14 billion years?

Unread postby zahal » Mon Feb 12, 2018 10:35 am

That is what Arch claims:

https://archmission.org/

A tiny plastic optical disk the size of a half dollar able to store 360 terabytes and last 14 billion years. I'd buy that for a dollar!!
Sitting in a room.....thinkin' shit up.

 14 billion,.. why 14 billion? why not say 15 billion, or even 13.9 billion... thats only a million years less...which is like nothing when we talk about lengths of time 3x greater than the age of the planet.

Think I might want to see some examples and logevity tests before I commit my dollar o.0

Sad thing is, the way the interwebs is going 360TB probably won't be enough in 14 years, let alone....14 gazillion... still those are nice big numbers with lots of zeros which always look good and fit in this sensationalised world that we live in.

Lol, that’s the stupidest thing I’ve seen yet this year. Not even a good scam.

What you really want for long term archival purposes is M-DISC. It's like carving your data into a stone disk.

The storage medium might be able to last "14 billion years" so they say, but the technology required to read it certainly won't.

If you were to use such a technology to store graphical information in an extremely high density microfiche type format, that would help to store information for long periods and it should be easily accessible in the future, even if our society fails. (The Sumerian tablets of the future)

A picture speaks a thousand words, so they say!
