I don't have much experience of SGI machines, but I do remember being in high school and college in the early-mid 90s and lusting after the Indy, especially the WebForce version as it was built for web production or so they claimed. And it looked so much cooler than PC's. Plus it had a camera!
I then wanted the O2 purely due to the way it looked, especially with the SW1600.

Now I have both and I have to say the Indy is my favorite.
It's quiet, easy to deal with, I love pizza box type cases as they save space, and the case is more solid than the O2.
It has an unpretentious charm to it.
And my 133MHz 4400 on 5.3 flies compared to my PC's and Macs of the period. In rendering simply table based websites it runs at 10x their speed...

Hey, the guy who spearheaded the WebForce project, John McCrea, is a member here! He wrote up the history of the project and posted it on his website, ab fab reading:

Good posts, probably among the best insights into SGI's internal history out there. That seems relatively uncommon, though I suppose it's going to be more obscure than internal history for any company. In fact, these posts are so detailed I have considered doing an SGI History "Part 3 and a half" about it. Maybe if I ever redo the SGI History series. There are a few things I would change in that series, even now that the compilation is released (e.g. actually remember that the Challenge machines exist, make a few corrections I have had to add with cards particularly with regards to CRAY and NUMAlink, talk slower, script revisions, include some decent pictures of my own machines rather than poorly cropped low-res pics from the web).

Keeping on topic, however, I can fully recommend the McCrea WebFORCE posts.

Internal history wise, Jim Clark's 1998 book "Netscape Time" has some doozies on what was going on at SGI in the early 90's, and why those events convinced him that the only way to save his sanity was to leave the company, the company he created...
