The configuration is OK, I think. But I'm not able to compile the mpg123 for the IRIX 5.3 at the moment (and I am not able to find one which works on the R3k Indigo...).

From geektechnique.org :

(224.27 KiB) Downloaded 8 times

Which is the same binary from Marcus' old site ftp.mayn.de

Thank you very much! It works perfectly. The "gr_top" say that the mpg123 uses between 71%-94% cpu but the sound is great.

IRIS Indigo was always well regarded for its good sound quality.

The Octane also sounds pretty good. Not sure what hardware's in there, but it's great. I often use mine to play music when I'm working downstairs.

And interestingly, I've always been impressed with the sound quality from my Indigo2. Always thought my music sounds better from it than from my PC - of course the PC does have pretty bog-standard onboard audio...
Systems in use:

:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30
