Rack Tezro/ Onyx4 V12 and UV/ IR4 Test.

Unread postby mopar5150 » Tue Sep 26, 2017 8:48 pm

Hey Guys,

Over the weekend I was able to do some testing on the different rack graphics systems. I will edit and add items as time permits.
I know recondas will get me for not capturing the UV PROM boot  I forgot but will get it posted.

The question of installing a DM3 in a second compute chassis came up but I don't have one of those cards to test with. If somebody has one let me know and I will give it a try.

No animals were harmed during this test but a V10,a numalink cable and my last glass CRT display gave their lives.

I set up and tried the following..

1) Tezro rack system with V12 connected to another rack unit also with a V12.
2) Tezro rack system with V12 connected to an IR4 G-brick.
3) Onyx4 rack system with the GN2 graphics using ATI cards with IRIX.
4) Onyx4 rack system with the GN2 brick and connected to an IR4 G-brick.
5) Origin350 expansion chassis with a V10 installed with no IP module.

Photo of my test area proving how tolerant my wife is. :D

Test 1) Tezro rack system with V12 connected to another rack unit also with a V12.
Once the two serial numbers were set the same the system works fine and sees both V12s. The interesting part was that they are two separate displays and the mouse will travel between them but I was not able to drag anything from one display to the other. I saw this same behavior with the SG2 brick displays on the Onyx4 test.
Also got several "barrier sync warning" messages during PROM boot.

Test 3) Onyx4 rack system with the GN2 graphics using ATI cards with IRIX.
I was finally able to get this system working. The problem I encountered was that the default vertical sync at power up on the ATI cards was 86Hz(determined with a scope). No monitor I had would display this. I tried breaking off the H&V sync pins on a cable to see if it was SOG, but no luck. By using an Extron display converter I was able to see the PROM screen and install IRIX. Once IRIX starts it is 1280x1024 60Hz. I was only able to get one port on each card to display, but I am not very knowledgeable with the IRIX graphics setup. A side note that even if I set the serial numbers to a "P" the splash screen still comes up Ultimate Vision.

Test 4) Onyx4 rack system with the GN2 brick and connected to an IR4 G-brick.
I connected the IR4 G-brick to the Onyx4 UV system and it booted to the GN2 brick and ignored the IR4. The photo doesn't show some of the numalink cables, but they were there for the test. Those cables were not designed to be taken on and off in a test environment.

Test 5) Origin350 expansion chassis with a V10 installed with no IP module.
This setup didn't work because the chassis thinks it is an expansion chassis missing fan #1 (removed to get the V10 in). I Know that there were cpuless IP modules that may allow this to work, but I don't have one to test with. Interestingly I was not able to set the serial to anything but a "M" serial.

Thanks for carrying out the test. :D

That's very interesting (being able to drag the mouse pointer between the displays, but not being able to drag anything else between the displays).

It probably has something to do with the cards having separate frame buffers and not scaling in an SLI type mode.

When I read this I think "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"

My ability to actually use an SGI system is not real strong and I am sure there are several things that can be tried. I will leave this stuff set up for a week in case someone wants a specific test done. Keep in mind you need to be pretty specific with instructions for the software noob here. :D

Nope that is about 35 feet of 220v extension cord from my welder. Comes in handy for welding out in the driveway or running the IR4 in the Kitchen.

That's why. I've seen the same if you mix Onyx2 nodeboards or IO6Gs with different PROM revs in a single system, and it goes away once you flash them all to the same rev.

Hi Mopar5150,

great to see this testing.

It’s just like old Dr Dave days (for those nekochaners who remember).

Love the fact that you had IR4 laying about and put it into test, also love the industrial Rack trolley wheels...

I remember lusting after IR4 as ultimate SGI revival target.
Who knows, when one turns up on eBay (in Australia) I may just give it a go.
Mind you I worry about power consumption and load on domestic power circuits, I would not want to kill home electrical system :-)

In fullness of time I will get DM3 test off and running...

Does anyone out there have cpu-less mpx or pci module ?

Really interesting results.

Cheers,

jwhat.

Hi John,

Test 5) Origin350 expansion chassis with a V10 installed with no IP module.
This setup didn't work because the chassis thinks it is an expansion chassis missing fan #1 (removed to get the V10 in). I Know that there were cpuless IP modules that may allow this to work, but I don't have one to test with. Interestingly I was not able to set the serial to anything but a "M" serial.

Did you try to connect the O350 expansion module (that holds the V10) with the O350 base module through XIO ?
A numalink connection will never work since it requires an ip53/ip59 in both bricks.
A O350 expansion module lacking the ip53/ip59 is exactly what SGI sold as pci-x module and those modules need to be connected through XIO
in order to add the 4 pci-x ports to the entire system.
I have an ATI-based Onyx4 gfx-module which has no cpu-board installed; it is connected to an O350 base module through XIO and
works perfectly.

Hi Xiri,

I took up some of this testing in Australia (as a few of John’s boxes made their way here).

The problem I kept coming up with CPU-less config was fan over-revving (with V12 or DM3) and L1 shutting down machine (with XIO connection).

Note sure why as G2 setup has simillar setup and works ok. There are a lot of ways you could do this, but have not managed to test them all.

Was wanting to try:
1. CPU-less without IO9 / no PCI cards / with V12/DM3
2. CPU-less with IO9 / with/without PCI / with V12/DM3

Problem is that I need another chassis unit to allow testing to be done easily.

Cheers from Australia.

Yes,
I attempted to use a V10 in a chassis with and without an IO9 board and using XIO with no luck. Both ways still triggered fan warnings. Like you, using the ATI cards with the AGP riser worked fine in the same chassis. I believe that the CPUless node is required by the prom for Vpro to be supported.
