BASH the SGI font logo
It has been a while and one of the things that bothers me to death is when SGI changed from the cube to that S G I crappy custom font logo. I swear to god, I get really pissed anytime it comes up in conversation. I hate that logo with a passion. Just look at an Onyx2 with the cube vs the skins with the new logo. What in god's name were they thinking. I remember when the website changed over and I thought it just looked so bland. I think it was the same company that did the SyFy rebranding.
Anyway, I wanted to see what everyone else's thoughts were.

I mean, I just want an Onyx2.

I prefer the bug logo, but not enough to put an "old" skin on an Onyx2 that was a late enough model to come with the homer logo.
I also prefer the old, mechanical 'slab' keyboards.

To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. (IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report)

I too prefer the bug logo, but I really like the "sgi" font.

The 2000-era type is fine, especially after seeing what they did in 2009, not that anybody cared by then. As a proof of "it can always be worse..."
The late-90's badging on the machines (Octane, o2, etc era) always seemed a bit "unstable" or unbalanced to me. They look good but if anybody was going to recreate it, it would be extremely difficult to make it look correct. See the people that have custom-painted their octane and stuck on replacement stickers. Every one looks like shit and IMO it's not the guy's fault as the stickers were printed right and in the right location. It just seems off. Unprinted machines are much the same. Finish texture makes a big difference too.
The older machines (Indy, Onyx, etc) don't have this problem for whatever reason. It's hard to explain, maybe the curved surfaces have a lot to do with it? Although some of those Indy badges are pretty hokey, it's not as bad as an "Intel Inside" sticker...

The logo is not in the same league as the bug logo, but isn't the worst I have seen. I dislike the 1999 logo mainly because signaled that SiliconGraphics leadership had completely lost its way, though we kinda knew that by 1999 anyway.

Re: BASH the SGI font logo
Both logo's are cool, but I really do prefer the original Cube Logo, as it accurately describes the original reason for SGI's existence!
Later machines such as the Tezro have the best of both worlds, by sporting both logo's

I'm planning on getting a cube tat. The font logo would just look stupid.

100% onboard with you there.

Re: BASH the SGI font logo
i agree that the revamp is tainted by sgi losing it's way. i'll never be able to unsee this:

strange choice that they threw every design element out that they were known for and replaced it with a pretty generic looking sci-fi font that looks like it came from some free-fronts library. you'd think the cube should have survived in some updated form. imagine a car maker just swapping out their badge for something else...
the return of the cube on the tezro looks fairly lame though the way it's done. like a bad attempt at fan-service. sorry owners!

I remember seeing the new branding and thinking “um, what is 3D about that?”
Went from a 3D logo to a 2d one.
Seemed like a perfect allegory for the type of minds that took over from the previous ones.
Very flat and two dimensional.
I ended up liking it later. Primarily the Octane 2 color scheme. Tezro too. Though the Vw320 and sw1600 look much cooler with the bug than the Vw 540 and sw 1600 with font only.
