How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

Unread postby jirka » Tue Aug 29, 2017 12:44 pm

I am curious how often people use their SGI workstations. As many of you has more than one computer it probably makes sense to think about the most used one.

For example, I use my O2 as my main home computer from 2005 (when I have got it from Ian Mapleson :D ). But I'm spending less and less time with this machine as there are tasks that it cannot handle well (WWW browsing is the main example). Still it's about 2 hours per day in average.

My Octane, and later Octane2 was my main machine from 2003 to 2006 - when the WWW wasn't so bloated I literally did everything with it: browsing, movies, music, gaming, you name it.

Today I'd need at least a Tezro I think.

Not much really. I try to make sure they still work every year. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, work with my retro-computers has low priority. I'm still actively reading about these things but can't really spend more then few hours a month physically interacting with them.

I use mine a lot because I don't have super high-end workstation software (Maya and Pro/E for example) on any of my other machines.

I use my Fuel occasionally, but the G5 is still my daily driver until the Talos arrives. With a 900MHz CPU and a nice display, the main limitation is being stuck on Fx3.

Sadly, the Indy is pretty hopeless for regular use. It's just for messing around with.
smit happens.

No SGI.

Holding out for a new mac pro next year. My old one lasted 11 years before crapping out- tho when I bought it, it was already 5 years old.

it completely depends on what i do. for most graphics stuff and all kinds of development (except for cuda for example) they're my first choice. admin tasks anyway because for that ssh is usually enough.
however, for all audio things and webdev (frontend) i fall back to osx.

I don't always succeed due to travel, work, etc. but I try to boot up at least one of my UNIX machines every week. Definitely not getting any real work done on any of them, it's purely for leisure purposes - getting old stuff to compile, pretending to learn StudioTools while I'm just flying around with my Spaceball, etc.

The O2 is in my bedroom. It's plugged into a shunt relay power bar so that Saturday morning at 9AM (I do love how it supports auto power on) it and the external peripherals turn on and come up.
Then it typically sees IRC and gmail inbox use for most of the weekend.

My O350 is still in 24/7 operation, though it's remaining tasks are not that important. It's nice to have one box that's available immediately when I need it. It's in a rack at work though.

At home when I need an SGI I usually power up my Octane2 or Tezro. Everything else is mostly for tinkering and messing around; I need to attach monitors, keyboards etc first.

There's usually one system torn down for repairs or restoration. Right now that's my Fuel. I try to limit it to one system to stay focussed and avoid a catastrophic mess.

I don't use my SGI's for things like web browsing or managing my media collection.

I don't use any of my SGI machines on a daily basis, my daily driver is my Mac Pro 2013.

The SGI machine that I fire up the most is my O2, it's a really enjoyable, little machine to play with. :D and practical due to its size.

I get great enjoyment from restoring SGI machines and keeping them in good working order, and I'm not nearly done collecting them. (For me SGI is a great hobby which I truly enjoy!)

My SGIs were used a couple of times a week until earlier this year (usually 2-3 hours of use at a weekend). Then what with moving house (lots of DIY jobs to do), and getting a puppy, I have to admit they've not been used as regularly over the last few months. Maybe a couple of times a month?

I expect it to rise again later in the year as the puppy becomes more grown up (and trained), plus the weather deteriorates and makes for more time spent indoors - when it's sunny in Scotland, you've just got to go outside an enjoy it :). For me, my SGIs are for hobby stuff, and a lot of my previously free time that I'd play around with them is being taken up with other commitments at the moment.

Of course, the fact that the 20" monitor I use for them blew up last Friday doesn't help either. Going to pick up some replacements from work hopefully this Friday.
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen: R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22
:Fuel: - Lithium: R14000 600MHz CPU, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 1Gb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.30
Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30

Of the three Octanes I have at home, two get used daily (each night when I arrive home, I turn them on, although one has been turned on this morning as I am attempting to get FC linked via a switch). I also have an Indy and an o2 videoing the car park at work, just in case something interesting happens, both of these are on 24/7.

I guess monthly describes my usage pattern best. The SGIs are my hobby and that's fine. Currently I have no usage scenario in which I would use the SGIs for daily tasks.
Besides, I think it's OK to use current hardware for daily tasks and on the job but still enjoy a good classic retro computer. Perhaps even more so, because many systems today are so bland and boring, they provide good contrast to the SGIs. :-)
