My favourite is the :320:, followed by :O2:. The machine I always wanted (and never got) was an :Indigo2: (love the colour).

But tbh when I think SiliconGraphics superiority, and everything that made SGI. It has to be :Onyx: :Crimson:.

Interesting topic for myself actually, as I'm considering flooding ebay and going down to a few machines.

As I look at all my machines and think about it and think about the things I do, what works at the turn of the key and those that require special needs, I'm so torn... it like giving away all the puppies in a litter and keeping one.

Needless to say it will be an Octane.. and yes, I'd be greedy and keep at least three of them.

I had access to only two machines:

An :O2: which was the system of a friend who used it with Maya, but not for serious work. He had also media for some flame version but no dongle, licenses or disk subsystem. Ironically he had to work with combustion 2 under Windows instead.

Later bought an :Octane: from another friend for only €50 but didn't get access to IRIX 6.5 or compilers, so sold them some time later.

Because I'm related more to Sun workstations and Solaris no other platform was/is an option. In the time Sun was sold to Oracle I get rid of near to all of my workstations and sold them for some bucks to another friend. Only the SPARCstation 2 is still here.

Later tried only once again to hire a SGI workstation and missed to bid at the end. This was the lovely SNI skinned :Indigo: (aka SNI RW 320), now in save hands of Jirka ;-) . In my opinion the Indigo was the first SGI desktop workstation which fits perfect next to an CRT monitor, not placed beneath or as deskside system. Also it was one of the last 32bit R3k and first R4k based systems. Not even Sun offered this upgrade path (32->64bit)concerning the same enclosure but had other reasons. So I'd like to see one in person or at least further dream of one. :-)
Sun Solaris 2.4 @ SPARCstation 2 and SNI PCD-4H. Migration path: NetBSD

Only used O2 and Octane.

Wanted to try Indigo Iris.
Wanted to try Octane with two CPUs.
Wanted to try Onyx2 with 4 cpus maxed out.

Have tried a tezro while at Digital Domain but only messing around the desktop. It was a flame workstation.

Wanted to try Maya/Softimage on Tezro with 4 CPUs.

My main use for SGI has always been the Maya, Softimage, Houdini, Lightwave 3D. Photoshop and compositing as well.

I think my favorite is my little 400 Mhz O2. It boots very fast (drive setup by Ian).

:O200: Origin 200 ??? Specs soon

My favourite SGI computer is the O2 with the R10k processor (and, of course, with the 1600SW screen). Actually, such machine is still my main home desktop (I use if for about 70% of my home computing).

But the Crimson is the best representation of the SGI, I think.

I'd say the Indigo. That was my first SGI and main driver for many years. I think that really defined SGI. But, if I could have anything, I'd want an Onyx.

My favourite machine is my Onyx RE2 Rackmount. I love hardware and that thing is packed full of it, and it is so big. And loud. It is computing on an industrial scale.

Closely followed by my plucky little R3K IRIS Indigo which was the first SGI machine I got. I like that as I knew nothing much about SGIs at that point, and the hardware needed fixing, so I learnt a lot about the hardware and IRIX. And it was in Jurassic Park.

Tezro, the one and only.

Because i like the color most of any sgi, and the form looks like some sort of sex-toy for giants :)
Everybody seeing it the first time when he visits my home, says: WTF is this?

The absolutely best looking thing is the illuminated 3D sgi logo on the front. I've seen this also on the rackmount prism, which is absolutely great looking.

The Tezro is an awesome piece of work from a design point of view and they also run nice and quickly (An absolute pleasure to use)! :D

If you look at it from a power consumption vs performance point of view, then the Tezro is quite possibly the best SGI machine to own!

pssfff if you mean plastics ... thought it was the the massive cube-shaped spacecraft that was first encountered on stardate 2365, near System J-25 in the Delta Quadrant, by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D.

The Borg cube was registered as the maximum warp factor ever appeared to be greater than that of a Galaxy-class starship, as the Enterprise-D.

Anyway that's all for now: I largely prefer rack mountable :D
Thus, A couple of O350 look interesting from this point of view.

Octane II - Good power, decent graphics and in a form factor that although heavy, does not take up a huge amount of space and is probably among the less electricity hogging of the lineage. I also like the internal design of the hardware, it's very interesting to take apart.

I'd give that a +1. What lacks in the Octane I think, although it would spoil the design is internal 5 1/4 support. It is my top machine, small & powerful.

Octane.

The reasons why should be obvious to anybody who's ever used been in the same room as one.

For me it has always been the Onyx2 deskside. They are beautiful machines although tough to keep going and not a practical toy.
Second would be O2+. What a great little machine and together with a 1600 display was so cool.
I still have the clear prototype looking 1600 monitor but nothing to drive it.

The machine I actually use is an O350 4x600/ V10. I get my SGI fix with it and the spares parts are very cheap even though this system has been in use for a long time with no issues.
If the thing isn't on fire it's a software problem.
