SUN Sparcstation 4 / HP 9000's / Macintosh 7500

Unread postby yang » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:08 am

Hello !

I am releasing my collection of old computer gear.
I can also provide pictures of the hardware.
I am located in the central part of Slovenia,
Europe. I can ship worldwide. Shipping to European countries won't be
less than 40 EUR/piece. For USA or Asia shipping the costs will be
much higher ! I can deliver the hardware in the distance of 150km
from my home for additional payment.

Please send any reasonable offers for this vintage gear.

The equipment can be sold separately and consists from :

### SUN ###
2 x SUN Sparcstation 4

### HP ###
1 x Hewlett Packard Appollo 9000 712/60
1 x Hewlett Packard PC 9000 PC-308 (XT)
1 x Hewlett Packard 9000 E35

### Macintosh ###
1 x Power Macintosh 7500/100

All computers were operational the last time,
when I checked them, but I am selling them in "AS-IS" condition,
since many collect dust for some time now.
So please DON'T ask me either I can TEST the machines
for you or provide any system/boot logs and other stuff,
that requires me to invest my time in that.
Also I cannot be held responsible for shipping delivery misshandling,
which could damage the hardware. Bid only if you agree with these
terms. I am selling the equipment without any warranty.

You can contact me over private message or
through irc.freenode.net , nickname yang

Regards,
Jan

What is the difference between a SparcStation 4 and a SparcStation 5? (Wikipedia doesn't tell).

The SS4 is less expandable than the SS5, but has onboard 8-bit graphics. The disk brackets are different, the SS4 only holds 1 SCA disk in its normal configuration. There is 1 Sbus slot, instead of 3 Sbus slots plus AFX. They use the same processors.

Here is a picture showing the backplate I/O differences: (SS4 in middle, SS5 on bottom):

SS4 is a cost-reduced SS5 - lower maximum speed (no 170MHz), onboard framebuffer (S4 in 8-bits, so you'll probably need to add a GX/TGX if you want to run alternate OSes), audio is an option on a special SS4-only card, and there's only one SBus slot. There are fewer DSIMM slots (160MB RAM MAX), and only a single fixed disk mounted in a semi-mickey-mouse getup connected directly to the system board.
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

There are those who say I'm a bit of a curmudgeon. To them I reply: "GET OFF MY LAWN!"

FWIW NEXTSTEP fully supports the SS4, including the 8-bit S4 framebuffer. Since it doesn't support the 170 MHz TurboSPARC in the SS5, or any number of add-on SBUS cards, it makes the SS4 a reasonable system for playing with NEXTSTEP on SPARC.
