Hello All,

Generatrix's interest in my Notes v0.9 applet inspired me to do some more work on it. I've fixed a few bugs, cleaned up the code, added some relnotes and packed it all up in a nice little tardist.

Get it here:

http://www.sillypages.org/sgi/notes-1.0.tardist

Enjoy!

Thanks much!

Works nicely on my O2 (R10k/250, IRIX 6.5.27).

Works very well with Octane (R10K/250, IRIX 6.5.30), just a short question... -How is determined the foreground color? I mean, with my desktop customization I'm getting white fonts; and it would be perfect if I can change it to black or anything close to that.

Already tried with the ASCII file inside '/.notes', but does not seem to work for me, since I got this:

Code:
notes
Notes: read 1 note from //.notes .
NEdit: Color name SGI_DYNAMIC TextSelectedForegryellow not in database
NEdit: Color name SGI_DYNAMIC TextSelectedForegryellow not in database
NEdit: Color name SGI_DYNAMIC TextForeground not in database

Yes, I know I'm asking too much... if there is no way, it is well, don't worry! :D
BTW: this app looks seems to me like the perfect partner for IconBar, you're getting something very cool here.

All the best,
Diego

Notes works as advertised for me with 6.5.30. (Edit: except for a 1x1 square window Named "Notes Window" (Instance/Class: Notes Window/Notes) that's only visible in the overview. Its Map State is IsViewable, so you should probably just unmap it). The .tardist needs a few small improvements, starting with setting the "default" flag for the binary and probably the documentation. While you're there, you could add it to Icon Catalog, maybe using the icon and file type rule below. Since there's nothing useful to add as a DROP or ALTDROP action, maybe you could enhance the -new command to accept a second parameter, either an initial text (so you could start all your notes with the current date just by running notes -new "`date`" from the toolchest, or alternatively, a filename to read.

Attachments don't seem to work for me right now, so here are the rules and icon:

Hey all,

@canavan - thanks for the comments. The little square window you're seeing is a hack-ish fix for the 'notes will start with a new note' bug, as I couldn't figure out how to set the WM_COMMAND property on the toplevel window. It also solves Notes quitting after the last note is deleted. A 0x0 window seemed like a small price to pay to get those two issues out of the way. Either way, the source is in the tardist so if anybody has the chops to fix it 'properly' - please do :)

As to improving the tardist - I'll see to that when I get back to london in a few weeks.

Take care,

J.

Hi there!
...I can capture some snapshot later, I think it is an interesting app with lots of potential to grow up with time.
All the best,
Diego

Hello All,

I've just booted my Fuel for the first time in a while and over the weekend I'll try to work on some of the feedback here and some of the stuff on my existing TODO list for v2.0.

Could you please clarify if it was the actual tardist "install" or the "running" of the binary that was the issue?

If it's the running of the binary, it might be some sort of 6.5/6.2 or o32/n32 issue of which I have no experience in solving. Moreover, I have no access to the 4D/Indigo/Indy/Indigo2/o2 classic hardware or IRIX 5.3/6.2 to test my code. I'd be grateful if you - or anyone else - can compile/test the code on such machines. Perhaps we can find a way to integrate those binaries into the tardist or produce a parallel release that works on those machines.

The source code is in the tardist, it gets installed to /usr/local/share/notes/src.

Font size has been on my TODO list for v2.0 since forever, hopefully I'll be getting round to it now.

I'll be looking into your suggestions @canavan.

If anybody else has ideas or features they want me to consider for Notes v2.0 - now is the time to speak up :)

Jimmer

I can't read the files on 6.2.
Code:
WARNING: Skipping product xxxxxxxxxxx. Use newer version of the installation tool to read this product.

I'm trying to find documentation of how inst file format changed for 6.5, so far without success. Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have a tarball of the source .c .h files? I'll see if that will build.
