Origin 300 Serial Number Issues

Unread postby dclough » Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:32 am

I have some great news, and some not so great news...

I won an Origin 300 off of eBay. It was supposedly going to be a Dual 600MHz with 1GB RAM. What I got in the box was an O300, Dual 600MHz, with 4GB RAM! It was a very, very, VERY nice surprise.

However, when I tried to swap in my new quad-500 board courtesy of Adrenaline, I ran into a problem with "UNKNOWN BRICK TYPE". I tried forcing it to be a C-brick, but the changes aren't persistent in the NVRAM, and I don't think it's even saving to the EEPROM.

Thinking I could solve my problem with an IO8 firmware update, I brought the 1.18 L1 up to 1.44.0.

Now I'm stuck with "UNKNOWN BRICK TYPE" and a missing System Serial Number.

I heard a trick where you can attach an L2 and it would pull the serial from the L2, but I don't have one, and I'm not sure where to get this Linux L2 emulator I've heard so much about.

What can I do?

The SGI L3 software package will include the L2 emulator, and should let you set the system serial number. I'm not sure off the top of my head if it's going to help you with the "unknown brick type" message.

For info on L3 check this thread this thread and this one

I'm pretty sure there's some relevant info in threads where people have swapped the PIMMs in their Fuels, but I'm a little pressed for time -- hopefully somebody else will step in while I'm doing other things...

Got the serial number put into place via the L3/L2 emulator.

Many thanks to smj for his consultation on the matter!
