Nekochan Net

Hello!,

Yesterday a Nekochan member kindly gave me an old Supermicro server. I plan to use this machine quite a lot, because it turns out that I have a pair of Pentium 4 Xeon HT at 3 ghz around and also quite a lot of memory. This is the motherboard of the guy:

It has an IDE controller and an Adaptec AIC-7899W controller for Dual-Channel Ultra160 SCSI. So, my plan is to use one of the PCI slots to put a card with SATA ports and install some modern hard disk drives on the server to store my data. However, I have a question regarding the HDD for the operating system and the applications. Do you think that it would be worth it to install 2x70Gb SCSI HDDs in RAID 0? I could even install a 0/1 RAID with four units. The noise and power consumption are not a problem, the server will be in a open office and I will not have to suffer it .

If noise and power consumption aren't an issue go right ahead. The newer Western Digital Black SATA II drives would be larger, faster, quieter and use less power, but also more expensive. You can probably pick up a pair of Maxtor Atlas II 15k 73gb drives for ~$50 versus probably $200 for a pair of 1TB Western Digital Blacks (maybe more now with the hard drive shortages). Not sure what you're going to be doing with the server, but I'd go the Ultra160 in RAID 0 route, especially since you have a Dual Channel controller. Be sure to put them on separate channels for the best performance.

About what I am going to do with the server... well, it will be my desktop computer. It turns out that I usually work with headphones .
