Hi

Please can somebody tell me what the following is?

SGI Software Library Irix 6.5 advanced workstation
Product number SG-SC4-AWE-6.5 Rev L

Can you tell me what this is?

SGI Software Library Irix 6.5
Product number 814-0544-008

Are they installation CD's of Irix?, if so is one (advanced workstation) just a more advanced version of the other?

Thanks
brams

adv. ws just has some more apps but you can use both as a part of the 6.5 base release.

Don't know about now but at one time SGI actually had a way to buy Irix without the support contract. Cost $250 which really isn't unreasonable considering what other commercial operating systems cost. Alexis Cousein described how to get it and what the part numbers were but the name ( at that time, anyway ) was "Advanced Workstation Environment." This could be it .....

Seems like AWE was just a marketing thing early in the 6.5 release cycle to hype the advantages of 6.5 over earlier versions of IRIX. You got client Enlightenment with AWE, ASE added server Enlightenment and Comuter Associates Unicenter TNG framework.

Here's a blurb from a sales pdf of the day:
Quote:
New Packaging - IRIX 6.5 is available in two configurations, Advanced Workstation Environment (AWE) for visual workstations and Advanced Server Environment (ASE) for multiprocessor servers. ASE and AWE bring greater value to your system, providing tools for interoperability and enterprise system management.

BTW, proof of hype <insert evil grin> "IRIX Preservers Your Initial Investment" <as well as proof this isn't a current document>.

For the sake of completness:

The most recent version of this file snapped by archive.org (because the original link of course doesn't work):

First, a question: What model(s) of machine do you plan to use these CDs on?

This is a full release of IRIX 6.5 bundled with additional, optional software aimed at workstations, though I don't know exactly which release number corresponds to "Rev L". My guess is that it is at least 6.5.12, possibly something higher.

In general, SGI only sold/sells full releases of IRIX 6.5.x bundled with additional software aimed at either workstations or servers. While the Advanced Workstation Environment is/was targeted at workstations (Indys, Octanes, O2s, Onyxs, Fuels, and Tezros), it also can be used to perform a clean, full installation of IRIX on server machines, like Challenges and Origins. Likewise, the Advanced Server Environment can be used to set up workstation machines. More information about the AWE/ASE bundles is on the nekochan wiki at http://www.nekochan.net/w/index.php?tit ... vironments

When obtaining IRIX media, it is important to distinguish between "full" releases, which contain everything needed to install IRIX on a blank hard disk, and "Overlay" releases, which, by themselves, can only update existing installations. However, Overlay CDs can be used in combination with CDs from a "full" release to install IRIX from scratch. For example, if you have an IRIX 6.5.10 full release and an IRIX 6.5.22 Overlay, you can combine the CD sets to perform a clean installation of IRIX 6.5.22 without first installing 6.5.10. For more information about Overlays and other CD sets, see http://www.nekochan.net/w/index.php?tit ... nd_CD_Sets

Searching the net for the product number reveals that this is a "Hot Mix" CD from 1998. Hot Mix CDs contain demos and trial versions of software from SGI and third parties. They do not include IRIX itself.

Hmm...It would be helpful if we started correlating Revisions and Releases.

Folks: feel free to add them to this thread or directly to the wiki at http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/IRIX_6.5_E ... _Revisions
