Altix 350 Loudness / Running Server 2003 or 2008?

Unread postby Adrenaline » Thu Jan 12, 2012 7:30 am

I have an opportunity to get 2 Altix 350s and was wondering the noise level? With my Origin 300 on I can barely hear my wife 20ft down the hallway. Is it louder or on the same level as an Origin 300?

I have 2 Altix 350 C Bricks:

Code: Select all

I can't really compare them to the O300 but from what I've read the Altix bricks are a lot more silent. I think about
the same level as the O350 bricks. A single O200 is certainly much louder...

For me it doesn't disturb me much when they are running 2 meters away from my desk.

Cool, I'm ok with a little noise. I've a ton of other servers in my home office, but most of them are 4U (thus 120mm nearly silent fans).

One other question, I know Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2 came out for Itanium, does it install on a Altix 350?

They're not that bad, little louder if you have the "boost fans" (Only present in systems w/1.5GHz and up procs). It's the same chassis as the Origin 350 and I'm 99% sure it uses the same blowers. However, they do put out quite a bit of heat.

Won't install due to lack of a Windows driver for the Shub ASIC.

I guess I'll pass on it then, no need for another Linux/Unix only box then with my Origin 300 and Blade.
