For those of you who weren't paying attention, Solaris 11 is out. Yep, still expensive, and supposedly obsoleted a whole bunch of hardware. Don't worry, though - look at the feature list! Solaris 11, that fancy server operating system, comes out of the box with such wonderful things as

-Compiz
-GIMP
-xchat

I'm not sure if the pull of older SPARCs is "won't run" or "not supported", but I might just have to check, especially since you get Compiz now!

It's probably an eat your own dogfood kind of thing.

i.e. there's a cadre of Solaris developers at Oracle, both old timers and young bloods, that want a decent desktop experience for their own work (on bare x86 metal). They even ported the Intel KMS graphics stuff from Linux. From what I've seen, they did a pretty damn good job.

Keep in mind Oracle didn't kill off the Sun Ray either. There's definitely enough internal and external demand to keep all that stuff working well.

I tested the pre-release called "Early Adopters". The installer did not allow to continue on older machines, so this version will do the same ...

Open Indiana reports itself as Solaris 5.11 and that is open source.
Solaris 11 from Oracle download servers is not.
Confused yet..?

The Open sourcing of Solaris happened before Oracle bought it and Open Solaris and Open Indiana seem to be a lot less active than before... Somehow I get the feeling that open source is not the Larry Ellison way.. Time will tell.

I thought the deal was that they would push the source out under the CDDL sometime after official release of Solaris 11. Is Larry reneging on this previous statement?

I don't speak for Larry or SUN, but I would not be surprised if support of open sourcing it was less than enthusiastic.

if it doesn't make Oracle any money, it is the lowest priority. this sounds like a sinker to me.

I read a book on the culture of Oracle quite a long time ago and that sounds consistent with what I read.

That's quite misleading. None of the server install groups include any of those packages -- they only install the very base X11 libraries as expected. Compiz&co are only a part of the desktop group. The server installs are actually quite clean compared to the previous OS incarnations..

(a) they considered it important enough to point out in the release notes and
(b) Sun doesn't sell workstations anymore.

Some of the stuff seems OK, but GIMP in the default install? Compiz on anything that you're trying to use to get something done?

I guess it's probably things the Solaris developers liked (a lot), and in comparison I'd much rather they put little things like this in the documentation than leaving out essential information (take note, Microsoft  ), but it seems that a lot of this should stay in csw or Sun Freeware rather than be in Solaris.

Especially Compiz (shudder). Though most Sun work isn't done on a local graphics head.

Sun had a bunch of people up in Beijing doing the development work .... is that still true now that it's Oracle ?
