This is pretty funny- found it on several "tech" forums / blogs / birdcage wrappers.

"Sunway uses the ShenWei SW-3 1600, a 16-core, 64-bit MIPS-compatible (RISC) CPU. The process used to make the chips is not known, but it is likely 65 or 45nm, a few generations behind Intel's latest and greatest. Each of the 139,264 cores runs at 1.1GHz, the entire system has 150TB of memory and 2PB of storage, and of course it's water-cooled. The ShenWei chips are based on the Loongson/Godson architecture, which China — as in, the country itself — probably reverse engineered from a DEC Alpha CPU in 2001 and has been developing ever since."

Yeah, I was wondering how reverse engineering an Alpha gets you a MIPS as well.

Well, Alpha really was a 64-bit extrapolation of MIPS (R4000 specs were not published yet at the time Alpha was designed) crossed with the ill-fated PRISM (of which mostly the `EPIcode' concept was kept as `PALcode', but not the VAX-derived vector registers and instructions). The similarity between alpha and 64-bit mips is uncanny; except for the huge mistake of not allowing byte and word load and stores until the BWX-capable alphas.

Yes, but it'll never be a contender if it doesn't have an app-store with built-in lockout, or a cloud-front that mines your data or a fascistoid facebook group-hug that wont let you go or a moronic 'next-gen' tablet-inspired UI that you need to lick-n-stroke or any of the other nonsense that today's namby pamby iC*nts can't seem to do without.

The only thing we really need is a better browser. I have to admit to using the Assist's Windows desktop sometimes for browsing. Fireflop crashes too much. It's shit shit SHIT. God, I hate that pile of crap.
