Remote Irix and Cygwin

Unread postby nuts » Thu Nov 03, 2011 1:39 pm

I have installed Cygwin on my PC to use my Octane without screen.
I check the fontserver is on and I've modified the xdm-config like the wiki but:

It's really ugly. Faster than the sgi GPU but ugly ugly ugly.

The fonts are not correct and the colors too bad.
I tried to use Xnest but I have:

Code: Select all

Xnest :1-query octane
Fatal server error:
Unable to open display "".

edit: it works better with X command instead of Xnest

To get the correct fonts, you may either have to install additional cygwin packages (there should be some 75dpi and 100dpi standard fonts) or copy some files over from you IRIX box and add the appropriate paths with "xset +fp". Check the available fonts with xlsfonts, I'd guess that you only have the built in fixed font.

And don't worry about the 'ugly' login window, that's normal when you log in from a remote system.

To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. (IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report)
