Sun Fire V100/X1 Noise Question

Unread postby Adrenaline » Fri Aug 05, 2011 4:16 am

I was googling around for more information on the V100 and saw that it puts out 60db at idle? If it is that loud, has anyone with a V100/X1 tried swapping the fans out? I know it's a 1U enclosure so there isn't much you can do in the way of swapping out a smaller fan for a larger fan, but I am curious nonetheless.

I've got a V100 and it's pretty quiet as far as rack mount servers go.

Sweet thanks for the heads up, in searching a bit more it looks some of the original models ran their fans at full speed all of the time. As soon as I get mine I'll do some db readings and maybe swap the fans out if need be.

I have few v100s and netra x1 - and they are definitely noisy machines.

Noisy, and slow. V240 is nice and quiet and somewhat usable.
Stuff.

Not trying to do anything crazy with it, found one for $20 on eBay, probably play with it for a month and then sell it to a co-worker.

You guys must be thinking about the V120 which is the higher-powered SCSI version...the V100 has like 2 fans in it - the power supply and CPU. The V240 is 11dB louder than the V100 which is effectively twice the loudness.

I don't remember the 120 being scsi based... I do remember both of them are USII* based and are in my junk category. :)

I believe the V100 is IDE based so that makes sense.

Yes, the V120 has dual scsi hotswap bays and 5x1U fans.My Gigabyte Pentium 4 server is noisier than the V120 but the V120 is a noisy server. I changed the fans of my V120 but it's still noisy and I have the fans failure led turned on (power supply fan too slow) but It runs well. Not a powerful machine but with a sexy front (like other Sun and Cobalt servers).

I was thinking to buy a Netra X1 to play with less noise but.....

Ahh, If anyone wants an old Sun Sparc server, skip Netra X1 and Fire V100 servers with its 24 bits IDE controllers (only 120GB drives allowed). Better to buy their equivalents Netra T1-105( or Netra T1-AC200 with scsi and PCI SLOT! Don't worry to find compatible hd's with these servers.

The Netra T1-105 isn't really the 'SCSI equivalent' of the X1. It's got those silly mezzanine memory cards while the X1 can take pretty bog standard PC133 ECC memory that can be looted from next to anywhere..

Ops, Thank you. One more server out of my list. Do you know if the V100 front bezel can be mounted in a Netra t1 AC200?

Can't say I've ever tried. However looking at pictures of AC200s and the V100 front in my hand right now I'd say no. Some of the clips will probably match up (they do between V100 and T105) but the ends of the bezel have completely different mountings. So you'd have to hack the V100 bezel up, and it probably wouldn't look pretty..

I've got a Netra 105 and yeah the memory is weird boards, it's only a 440MHz as well.
