Cheapest POWER5 for LPAR and VIO

Unread postby stek1961 » Fri Mar 04, 2011 3:02 pm

I want one!

Would it be a P505? Any sources? Cheapest I've seen os $1300 from US, the shipping and VAT would kill it tho. Cheapest I've found in UK is £3300 + VAT - way too much...

I found this (in Austria):
http://cgi.ebay.de/IBM-pSeries-Power5-9 ... 988wt_1141
1800Eur - aint cheap but still much cheaper than 3300 UKP.
[OpenVMS 8.3 Cluster @ Digital Personal WorkStation 600a & Digital AlphaServer 1200] [IRIX 5.3 @ SGI Indy] [Solaris 9 @ Sun Ultra 1 Creator3D] [Solaris 10 @ Sun Ultra 30 Creator 3D] [System 7 @ Macintosh Plus] [System 7 @ Macintosh Performa 630] [MAC OS 10.3 @ PPC Mac Mini] [Debian 4.0 @ PC]

Alright... so it can run VM/LPARs but is not licensed to do so (my IBM knowledge is pretty much... lacking)?
Have a look at this one:
http://cgi.ebay.de/IBM-pSeries-Power5-9 ... 065wt_1141
They have "PowerVM Code" in the options list for this one... But the price is outrageous. The 3300 pounds offering starts to look better. :)
Sorry for not being helpful...

P.S. this shop had before one Power4 server with APV with a price range at 2-3k Eur. So maybe that is the cheapest one (and less capable partitioning AFAIK).

No problem! I was stupid, I have a p5-550 on the way with no VET code, I didn't realise you need to get one (and pay for one). Now I know!

It's not as if you can try it or hack it, you can only get the code from IBM locked to the serial and who knows what else...

Thanks anyway - this is a learning curve...
