Hi all,

Thought I'd introduce myself and share some photos of my disasterous (late to the party) entry to SGI at the same time

Long time geek and sgi fancier I recently bought an O2 from eBay, the price was good but the shipping was *Awful* Paid way over the odds and recieved this in the mail.........


Hmmm.........


Alas, smashed in to a thousand pieces and signed for in my absence. Thank you DHL, thanks a LOT.

After removing all the broken plastic (read: all), bending the metal, removing, fixing and re-assembling all the hardware I had it booting!!



...alas... 64MB ram, Stinged on the memory! 4GB hard disk......sounds like ))))HELL((((( defo on the way out

I'll probably be putting some requests in the 'want to buy' section shortly!

TO DO:

• Buy replacement covers
• Get 1GB memory
• 600MHz hack (http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/o2cpumod.html)
• New Hard disk!
• Upgrade IRIX to latest version

I'm currently in the process of supergluing the case my fingers.. together..

Just added a 72GB 15K SCSI Drive in... cloned the drive (thanks wiki!!) all is well. pretty stoked!

Yikes!! Looks like the base went through a grinder! Welcome to the forum. The black base seems to be more brittle than the rest as you have seen.

Since he mentions bent sheet metal my guess would be the package got dropped (or tossed) at least a few feet, and the bottom was the first point of contact. If that's the case then the parcel carrier did get the this-side-up part right.

My god... maybe you should seriously consider to buy a new skin and even a new metal case to accommodate all the components. There is a seller on e-bay that sells it (the metallic chassis). Finding the plastics is more a questions of patience, but you will be able to have all of them. Be also patient with the RAM, is not so easy to find it at good price, hehe . It turns out that the O2 is quite a delicate computer and it must be manipulated and packed very very carefully. Most of people selling them do not care about it.

Any O2 plastics I have here are treated with kid gloves. The dark base is the worst, though all the O2 plastics have gotten exceptionally brittle by now. The good guys carefully remove the chassis from the plastics and send separately.

I once got an Indy XZ board set, when I went to get the box, the rattling sound was ominous, as were the crushed and mangled ASIC pins within. I would have been far more upset if I had not gotten a good deal in the first place, but still...

The O2 is somehow a strange computer when you talk about the plastics. Mine has a rock solid skin and dark base. However, the mainboard faceplate was very very brittle, as well as the top lid and the fan grille. Luckily, some great Nekochaners sent all these components to me and the computer is perfect now. Surprisingly, the new top lid, fan grille and mainboard faceplate are also rock solid and very elastic. Maybe this depends of the date of assembly, or something.

Yikes, this is like the opposite of Octane porn. I had no idea bases were that fragile; I've got an extra base (and a bungled up skin) I'd like to get rid of, but I'd be concerned about how it'd fare getting mailed to the other side of the planet.

While gigabyte-class O2s are nice, keep in mind that IRIX 6.5 does date from 1998, and you can do a lot with 'only' 384-512 MB of RAM, especially at the hobbyist level. The big video houses and large-scale visualization systems do need every gigabyte they have, but hobbyist stuff isn't so demanding.

I already love my little O2 and I'm excited to take it as far as I can. Such a pretty thing it could be too so I'll do my best to restore it.

Since I just mostly browse the internet and chat on my local machine and SSH/VNC/RTERM all my work can anyone tell me if they find
the O2 when its spiffed up nippy enough for an everyday-workstation? Thats really my goal.

Well, it depends of what you want to do with it. The computer is fine to write documents (Latex, Open Office...), play MP3, write and compile small programs, do some light Internet navigation... you can also use it as a web server, FTP server, etc. However, do not expect anything ultrafast, specially if you don´t have a R12000 processor. I use it quite a lot and it is very nice and funny, but you have to be a bit patient.

That's such a shame. O2s are very delicate, and they often get damaged in shipping because of poor packaging. Anybody who wins one on eBay should be sure to alert the seller to this fact. At a minimum, properly packing an O2 requires an 18" cube box with packing peanuts on all sides, and even that won't guarantee a flawless trip.

For now, you might want to try repairing some of those plastics with Plastruct Plastic Weld. I've had great success with it - it creates a very strong bond. Your black plastic base may be beyond repair, but the blue upper casing seems mostly intact and since it doesn't bear any weight, it's a good candidate for repair.

As for the CD-ROM drive, depending on the symptoms it might be repairable. Many O2 CD-ROMs throw a small white plastic gear off the motor that actuates the tray, which causes the tray to stay shut. If you hear signs of life from the drive, consider opening it up (not difficult, just a few screws) and checking this gear. If it did come off, it is probably still inside the drive somewhere.

You can also try to substitute the CD-ROM with a SCSI DVD-ROM, they are very cheap on E-bay .
