My name is Alberto. I am from Spain but I live in Germany because at the moment I am working here. Last week, some guys gave me an old SGI O2 they were using for protein visualization years ago. They also gave me the original SGI CRT screen, a CrystalEyes system (the glasses and the emitter) and a nice SGI Dial box. The computer, and the rest of the things, had been in a wardrobe for seven years and all was completely covered in dust.
I was cleaning everything very carefully and I have found that, except the hard disk drive, everything is working fine. So, last week I ordered a refurbished 36 Gb HDD for my guy (it was 40$). The new HDD has already Irix 5.23 installed, but I have not plugged it yet in the computer (I have just received the unit).
I also found that some plastics of the computer case were extremely fragile (the small pieces). Most of them were OK, but the black faceplate of the mainboard was almost crystallized. After touching it, it broke literally into pieces. I was able to save the other plastic components, although I had to reinforce some of them with epoxi resin (the fancover and the top cover). However, the CrystalEyes, the Dial Box and the other things are in mint condition, as well as the big pieces of the computer case (hard disk drive module, audio/video module, etc,...). Do you guys have experienced the same problem?
Here are some pictures of the toy
I actually have a R12000 processor at 270 mhz with 1 Mb of cache. RAM size is 640 mb (I saw that only 6 sockets are populated with memory modules).
And this is the system. I put it on a small desk. I have the top cover removed because it is easier to work on the computer without it.
And some details.
Finally, this is my motherboard without the faceplate...
Of course, I am not planning to use the O2 for anything serious, but I think it is a great computer to have fun with. So, I would like to restore it completely and install the last version of the operating system. I already have the cd images but, since I am completely new in the SGI world, for sure I will have tons of questions in the future, hehe.
Thank you very much for this site
