Hi Guys I need some help.
I'm trying to install an Octane2 - Don't have external scsi crom.

What I'm trying to do:
I have put the contents of the installation CDs onto external (XFS formated) Hard drive.
I'm trying to boot it with boot -f dksc(1,3,7)/IRIX6.5/Overlays_1of4/stand/fx.64

its failing not sure what might be the reason - should the drive be formated to efs instead of xfs
or I'm getting the partition number wrong.

Any help would be much appreciated.. thanks

Partition number depends on how the disk you're installing from was set up, 7 might not be the right one. IRIX has specific partition numbers for various disk layouts, which I have inconveniently forgotten. My root+swap drive is 0 for the root and 1 for the swap partition (raw), and the two disks in an XLV stripe are on partition 7. Either that, or you are trying to boot a file from an xfs filesystem from the prom and not via sash (IIRC the prom is able to auto-load sash if it can find it on the designated root drive)

Disclaimer: I may well be talking out of my ass.

Another option that quite a few people have had success with is deBugs IRIX Netboot Appliance - or DINA.
Code:
What is DINA and what can it do for me?
DINA is a small software appliance (self contained package of  software that contains an OS, network services and applications) that is specifically developed to service Silicon Graphics users.

It provides the following services:

   1. Allows any SGI computer to boot over the network and Install IRIX from DINA.
DINA will act as a BOOTP, TFTP and NFS server as required by the netboot and installation process.
   2. Function as a general NFS server for file storage for your SGI computers.
   3. Function as a repository for the installation of nekoware files.
   4. Can download and be synchronized with nekoware files so that you have a local copy of the latest nekoware.

DINA is run from within VMware's Workstation or freely downloadable VMware Player. By closely following debug's provided documentation I found DINA very straight forward to set up and use.

DINA documentation is available here: http://se.mirror.nekoware.net/SGI_relat ... ation.html and a nekochan thread on DINA is here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16718687&

Booting sash and fx are not the problem, provided you know where they are (the sash needs to be on the volume header, but it should be if it's another Octane disk). The problem is going to be getting the miniroot over onto the install drive and the flags set to boot from it.

It very possibly might work from an XFS drive, but you'd have to do it by hand because the automatic install looks for a CD-ROM or tape drive.

So.. Big thanks I was able to install my machine with DINA - nice tool !!

I have another quick question:
I got a box(software Library) with my Octane == Irix 6.5Fundations1/2 with 6.5.17 Overlays, August2002 Apps, Freeware(4CDs) etc... complete set.
I was trying to Install NFS/ONC3 but seems I cant solve the dependencies/conflicts
Is any other CD outside this set needed ? and if so which one

There is a separate CD for NFS. It might have been labelled "NFS/ONC3 Services for IRIX" or something like that.
NFS server on IRIX was an add on product but you can use an IRIX machine as an NFS client without it.

For those reading this later to solve their own issues, note that there's a wiki page on Using DINA for network installation of IRIX.

It is called: "ONC3/NFS Version 3 for IRIX 6.2 - 6.5" according to this wiki topic:

Oh yes I also have that CD (the NFS/ONC3) I just couldn't figure out dependencies.

To help others:
The Conflicts were resolved by adding NFS/ONC + 5.6.17_Overlays1of4(possibly later one would also do)

My OctaneII2x400R12K V12@1680x1050 Is Finally Fully Operational - what a great machine it is - I think its the best computer I ever Owned.

Thanks For Help Folks !

Yep, to add NFS you need to open both the ONC3/NFSv3 CD as well as the overlays CD (as the overlays have the updates to NFS needed to match the current version of IRIX).

One more thing - I can't find answer for it anywhere..
While browsing for file (for example when opening a file in image view) in the "select file" window I always see the dot files - which make it messy
How to make the dot files to stay invisible in that "select file" windows ? there is a button "filter" which I believe allows to enter a regular expression - i put a [^.]* there but I still see the hidden files..
Is there an resource for that I can possibly set in .Xdefaults (couldn't find any in man pages)..

Anybody knows ?

Well, filtering doesn't seem to work here either, I guess it's a bug in ViewKit
