Hello,

I'm new to SGI and to the forum. I'm a programmer (12 years and going) but always on PC and various unixes.
Must say SGI hardware and software is fun, I wish these machines were more accessible when I was starting out.

Got an Octane off ebay for 60 bux to play with, came with a 13w3 to vga adapter and an scsi cdrom drive.

IRIX UI is great, I think its sad that there's a lot of people who have not experienced it.

Anyway, just sayin' hi! :)

Hi there Binary0x01!!

I'm new to the forums and SGI as well. Only a couple of months. I've also got an Octane :) It came with a CD ROM (which died - had to replace), a massive 21 inch behemoth SGI CRT monitor (too big to fit on desk - had to get an LCD) and a bunch of cables with the original OS disks. Since the initial purchase, i've dropped in a V12 card, dual 400 Mhz procs, upgraded system fans, 3 new HDD and sleds, DVD ROM and a new external enclosure for it! Just warning you.... it's addictive....

Have fun!!!

That part about it being addictive is too true.

Welcome aboard! These are fun machines, definitely, and I've found it interesting to trace some of the hardware development across generations, and nice to explore the single system image stuff from N years back...
