Was gutting a few computers that I got from my former employers scrap pile. While gutting a Dell Precision 380, I yanked the processor and to my amazement found that it was made in China. The silking on the chip:

When the hell did China start making chips for Intel???

While Intel opened a wafer fab facility in Dalian last year, they've had assembly plants in China for awhile.

Presumably, given the age of the system you took apart, the chip was assembled in China using a wafer that was manufactured elsewhere.

Relatively speaking, manufacturing the wafer is the hard part; assembling the units derived from the wafer is much more straightforward and has long been done at separate facilities, often in low wage locales.
