Starting Maya 6.5 from any user with default desktop settings, its menus still disappear even after upgrading to V8. But they are correctly displayed after login with another user account whose desktop settings came from a Flame installation.

Hmm.. check your desktop color depth. You can set it to use true color.
This resolved the issue for me before I upgraded to a V12.http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/True_Color
This was on a Sony 21 inch CRT at 1280x1024_96Hz, otherwise use a LCD screen that can display 50hz

Similarly all my Maya display weirdness issues went away when I scrapped my V6 and put in a V12. If you have the means I highly recommend it, it is so
