Question: is anyone even supporting Irix for 2.5x?
I switched to Mac, so not me.
Sky is using Mac for most stuff, and I imagine that most of us are using a non-IRIX platform for most everyday computing. The last I heard even Hamei, probably our last holdout, was starting to think he'd have to move off his Fuel for some stuff. As you can see by Sky's sig line and his long history of posting stuff here he's still interested in IRIX - he just doesn't have a lot of tolerance for people who think that it's so wonderfully special in the modern context (that's my read, anyway). No one can argue that he doesn't know what he's talking about, either.
He's really right, unfortunately. As much as I dislike many of the compromises in commodity computing, it can do pretty much everything the best SGI can do with a fraction of the power usage, and do it faster. Sure, I hate the junk low end PCs that I can never get working right, but I have an old BOXX that's halfway decent, and while I can talk about how neat some aspects of SGI's designs were (same with Sun and DEC and IBM), I'd have been really pissed if I just spend $30K plus on a computer and it had some of the bugs SGI has been known to let out the door, although SGI did often wind up getting things fixed eventually.
