Combo card support

Unread postby pentium » Sat Oct 25, 2008 10:52 pm

I have a single free slot left in my 8600 and I want to plug a firewire/usb combo card into it so I can plug in external stuff as well as my ipod (now that I am running 9.1 I can use Itunes :P) I check ebay and I can find tons of combo cards for pcs but not much for macs (checking ebay canada briefly finds one card for $60). Is there anything really specific that says that I can't use a PC combo card in an older mac?

No reason why it shouldn't work, as long as the chipset has drivers. You just won't be able to boot from anything on it. I'd recommend something with an NEC USB chipset and a TI 1394 chipset, but YMMV. I've used an EHCI card successfully (pulled from a Sun, but it seemed to otherwise be a PC card) in a PM8600 under OS X before.

We are talking like OS 9.1 here though. Not OSX

It should still work. I was only stating that I'd tested it under OS X. I'm not totally sure what 9.1 has for USB chipset drivers, though, and it's possible you may only get USB 1.1 speeds out of it (OHCI driver only, perhaps).

That said, the only thing a 'Mac-specific' USB/1394 card has, that a PC one with the same chipset doesn't, is a ROM with Apple Fcode in it, allowing a USB keyboard to be used in OF or a 1394 disk to be bootable, or the like. As long as you don't need that, anything with the right chipset should work. As for what the right chipset consists of, I'm less sure for OS 9 than OS X, but NEC is a pretty good bet for USB (OHCI, and everyone who groks USB at all groks OHCI). TI is a good bet for 1394 both because all but the old PCILynx chips (and whatever the gimpy half-a-Firewire hootenanny in a VW540 is...) implement OHCI, and IIRC, Apple used TI chips in Powerbooks, but I could be misremembering.

It's worth Googling around to see if there's an EHCI driver for OS 9 floating around, too - that'd certainly come in handy.

Okay then, I'll have to keep my eye out.

EDIT:
Ebay does not have much in the way of combo cards in the mac section (in fact I can't find any) however in the pc section they are everywhere, some even include USB, Firewire AND either an IDE connector or an SATA connector however they all use VIA chipsets and I doubt they are mac compatible at all (I have enough trouble with VIA components as it is in Windows)
