gamma settings

Unread postby hindu » Wed Oct 12, 2005 4:28 pm

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great info...

i have had my O2 for a couple years, but never really tweaked anything until now.

my ol' O2 is now running 6.5.22, instead of 6.5.19.

the X server is doing the 24 bit thing, with custom backgrounds, at 1280x1024.

i am jamming to my shoutcast stream via mplayer.

i can even run apps from my Linux server, with full color.

couldn't have done it without y'all.

thanks bunches!!!!

i am using a monitor that does not handle sync on green (from gfxinfo: Monitor 0 type: DPC 5989).

as a workaround for the green tint, i have tweaked the gamma settings, reducing the green level and jacking up the red and blue.

it looks pretty sweet, but i have to manually reload the saved settings file each time i log in, cuz the green returns every time

is there a way to get that settings file to automagically load? the settings other than the gamma stuff work just great.

thanks again...

y'all rock!
dave

you could use an entry in the ~/.sgisession file e.g. like:
setmon -s <r,g,b,n> to change the sync color.

foetz,

thanks for the info.

i tried that already, and did some googling and found that the o2 always does sync-on-green.

setmon won't change it.

back to google i go!

ok...

got it to work by doing the following:

1) used xsetmon and adjusted the green gamma down, and the red and blue up so that the colors look ok

2) save the settings via the menu in xsetmon to a file in my home directory called mygamma.

3) added a line to /usr/people/MYUSERNAME/.desktop-MYHOSTNAME/panelsession

/usr/bin/X11/xsetmon -nogui /usr/people/MYUSERNAME/mygamma

now when i login, the xserver resets itself with my adjusted gamma values.

woo-hoo!!!

thanks a lot hindu .. this is working great! *yeah*

on another question about this .. IS THERE A WAY to automagically apply such a gamma-patch to all users ... by somehow implementing it into some systemwise settings or do i have to edit those for each user separately?

the main reason for this question (for now) is ... can i somehow apply such a gamma-correction to the "graphic login" screen as well? or is there another way of maybe "_modifying_ the login screen colors?

thanks again,
gaku

gaku,

glad it worked for you!

i am using a display that does SOG now, and don't have to do this anymore.

perhaps you can set up the root user's display settings, as i believe they are applied to the login screen.

try setting the root user up the way you want.

Can somebody post the optimal/best values of the gamma correction?

i'd recommend to set it to 1.3 which is the dtp standard worldwide so noone can blame you if your pic is looking odd on his screen.
