I know of a few things for audio exist, but are there any mildy serious audio editing apps for IRIX that exist? I'm thinking of something along the lines of Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge. Maybe not quite as over packed with features, but close.

I was thinking it would be nice to visually edit audio with multiple tracks, fading and such. Effects would be cool, too.

If the video software get goings and possible some audio stuff, maybe there should be an Audio/Visual section. That may be a bit over zealous, but still worth mentioning.

I was doing a bit of scrounging around on sourceforge and found a single project that has audio editing ported to IRIX. I was reading the FAQs on IRIX specific info and found this...

I've used the IRIX bundled soundtrack app, with good results. The only thing there is the limited number of effects, but it does have fading, echo, reverse, EQ and a few others. Really it's not that bad. I've mixed some pretty decent quality tracks by reading in the audio in from an analog 4-track and editing the channels.

Ok... there´s a list of audio editing apps somewhere (ring a bell) in the archives on the blog, where you can get "Useful IRIX software", plus there´s the audigimp thing on freshmeat I think. I´ll have to go and look for it. It´s not IRIX native but I think it runs.

GLAME looks awesome and even lists IRIX as a supported OS, but I had errors compiling with gcc 3.2.2.

I wonder if I could email someone in the sgi freeware dpt and see if they'll add it to the freeware site?

That would very cool to see in a tardist.

Yeah... that would be good. GLame looks awesome indeed. I wanted to compile it somedays.... but now I guess I am not even gonna attempt it... too little time. Working on 24 / 7 shift...

I was able to compile an older version if found at http://www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Software/514420/GLAME.html

after only inserting the gettext library (-lintl) into the Makefile at line #94:

GNOME_LIBS = -lgnome -lgnomesupport -lintl -lesd -laudio ....

the cglame, or command line version seemed to work, but the gui version issues the following error:

I have determined that this is a guile related error, but I'm stuck for now.

It works! (Sort 'a)

I did a recompile using

>./configure --with-local-prefix=/usr/freeware
>gmake

which (after some time) got me the error message

Then I added the guile library to the Makefiles in ./src & .src/gui by changing line 93 to:

Lo and behold it compiles! I ran it by:

>./gui/glame

When Neko has time I'll upload some screen shots.

BAD NEWS. The bad news however occurs after I'm in the program. I enter the FilterNetwork gui and try adding a new filter (by right clicking). It crashes with the message:

I take back what I said regarding the earilier bad news.
I ran the SAME executable that's on my Octane2, remotely from an Octane, and as I suspected...it doesn't crash in the FilterNetwork window...in fact it seems to work very well.

What's going on with the Octane2 I don't know...but ever since I got it, I've had iisues with the GTK toolkit freeware applications. Things like buttons icons splash screens and such being invisible but when viewed via a remote login in on another display (e.g. our Octane or O2's), the anolmaly is gone.
I've never gotten to the bottom of this..usually it doesn't crash the apps (it used to with earlier versions of gnumeric and abiword...but not recently) so I live with it. I really suspect it's an issue with the V6 graphics. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

The last GLame issue I'm struggling with is the audio output => I don't know what to put for "Default output device" any suggestions?

I wonder if Neko would be willing to put together a tardist (maybe I'll take a crack at it but the dependancies look like a bear!) and host the binary here?

Sure, that shouldn't be a problem, but I'm currently out of town until next week so it will be a while before I can look at it

Hm. It seems to be an oversight not to link with guile - I corrected this.

You did try nothing? Or try "out.analog" - see man alGetResourceByName.

I shot an informal email over the the guys at the freeware repository in hopes that they may add it to the pile. It might be nice to have them deal with unmamngling the code, beating it to submission, running it through the official the MIPSPro compiler and then it ending up into a nice tardist. I imagine it'll be a few weeks wait for the goods if it all goes through.

I'll post up any new info that I hear about it.
