Okay. Imagine a high school with an 80% attendance rate. Imagine that school being tested in the bottom 0.08% of the nation. Now, imagine that same school's academic team winning the state championship. That was us. Calhoun County of West Virginia Academic Team. I was on the B team, so I didn't get a metal. Oh well.
Anyway, this happened a few years ago, but I just remenbered it. The way a competition works in our state is simple. As many teams as possible from the state come to a host school (several dozen teams) and they have one on one competitions. With each round, the number of playing teams is cut in half.
So, I was in a room with my team and our school's A team. We were playing Gilmer B team vs. Calhoun B team (me), and Gilmer A team vs. Calhoun A team. My team had just lost against Gilmer B team and the A teams were up on their turn. Usually these can be pretty dull. Ex-presidents, Stock Market trivia, Chinese history, and the like. But there was one question which came up which tears me apart to this day. It went like this:
"This computer company founded in the early eighties created the revolutionary 'Geometry Engine'. They are responsible for many award winning movie special effects. Name this company which made such computers as the 'Indigo' and the 'Onyx'."
Of course, the one question which took me no hesitation to answer. One question on the most basic element of what I live and breathe, and our A team was up, and none of them knew jack about computers. I was even wearing a frickin SGI t-shirt that day! ARGH! Oh, the pain of that memory...
