Rather than clutter up the other useful posts regarding Mplayer, I figured I'd make a new one. Does anyone know why Mplayer doesn't allow/support reading from a cd or dvd drive under irix. It seems to work fine under aix and solaris.

Aside from that, has anybody given Xine a try to see if it was any faster than MPlayer?

Yes, I had a build of xine running a while back, but it wasn't very stable and I wasn't able to generate much interest from anyone in helping to work through the issues so I scrapped it.

Here's a small shot of the interface playing an AAC audio file:

I think I threw the screenshot with the video playing away - I'll look around for it.

Heh, read the thread - it wasn't working well enough to make a tardist. My original intent was to make one but unless the showstoppers get worked out (haven't tried it in a while though, maybe they have) - no tardist from me :)

IRIX doesn't have any DVD key exchange ioctls. I mailed the guy who was writing them - he got sacked along with most of the IRIX dev team before he was done. So you won't be playing encrypted DVDs any time soon :) Some obscure BSD had the same problem, and someone implemented the ioctls in userspace with the ds SCSI library - it's in libdvdcss somewhere.

Any volunteers? :)

VCD support should be easy though.

And more useful for those of us without a DVD drive :-)
