I bought an Octane and found the "IP30prom" in the
volumeheader on the system disk. I sold this system to a good friend
R12k 300 MHz + MXE + 1Gbyte

I bought a new Octane (2xR12k 300MHz + SSE +SE + 1Gbyte)
The new Octane I have doesn't have the "IP30prom" his in the volumeheader,
but it works just the same, or?

What does the "IP30prom" actually do in the volumeheader?

I'm not sure what it's there for exactly ... I think it might be there for flash updating the PROM, maybe a system variant of the manual method (from PROM):

flashcpu cdrom(0,4,7)/firmware/IP30/IP30prom.bin

The system probably checks that file on boot to see if the machine needs a firmware flash, and if it does automatically updates it. Just guessing though.
