The Soft¦3D user interface is horrible compared to the star-button in Maya. Work just flows so much easier when you don't have to travel ages with the mouse. I also like to customize my menus so that I can have the most used functions with one click. Although you can middle-click on a menu and therefore execute the last command this is no good when e.g. messing around with a new scene where quite often I delete the entire scene before starting from scratch but sometimes only want to delete a single object.

Compared to v3.9.2.2 hardly anything new has been added - mostly game-related stuff (better polygon reduction, PSX 2 image support etc.) and was only published because Nintendo insisted on a new version of Soft and had no interest in migrating to XSI. The "manual" they included is a horrible piece by Mesmer which lacks a glossary, has tons of typos and actually refers to v3.8 (and is therefore totally useless if you want to take full advantage of the new features in v4.0). Academic now, since 3D has been discontinued and is no longer sold. Price for the Irix version used to be £2,500.

Regarding Maya: imho the best version was 4 - after that it became REALLY bloated and unresponsive.

Man, it's great - loads up in about 5 seconds, compared to Maya 3 which takes about a minute. It also uses only 14mb ram at startup, whereas Maya 3 uses close to 60mb. I do miss the days before OOP/Java/crap bloatware.

As far as the old interface goes, I like it. It doesn't call attention to itself - lets you focus on the viewports. Seems like XSI's was over-compensation for 3D's "archaic" look, hence the fancy rounded buttons with beveled edges and shading. Overkill.

I like text buttons - you can immediately read their function. Soft|3D, Lightwave, and just a few other packages had that advantage. A far cry from 3dsmax, which is basically layers upon layers of cryptic icons.

Anyway, time to go render some dinosaurs...

Awesome. I hope your dinos have feathers!

(Man, it would be nice if I could get Maya to dump all the icons in favor of text.)
