IBM is getting some serious performance out of that beast.

That's cool.

But you know, the PowerPC chip wasn't going anywhere; Apple's switch was high profile but only a fraction of the PowerPC market. PowerPC chips are in millions of embedded devices, the Wii and the XBox 360.

PS3 is also PPC.

The last generation of game consoles sold about *165 million units (all three systems combined) over 5 years, that's about 30 million game consoles a year averaged.

Each generation tends to sell more than the last, and this next generation is entirely PowerPC.

All that right there is way more PowerPCs than Mac ever put out, so PowerPC is fine. And Apple is fine without it. Winners all around.

*120 million PS2s, 21 million Gamecubes, 24 million X-Boxes

Isn't the PS3 running on the Cell processor or whatever they call that? I am assuming that is running on PPC architecture?

Cell is a PPC core with additional specialized processors. It's "PowerPC based".

Ya I went and looked it up after this. I figured that it had to be PPC based as I couldn't imagine that they just built a whole new arch in that short of time.
