New Version of Apple X11 Released

Like the topic says; new version of Apple's X11 released today:

New in X11 v0.2
  • Support for Gnome, KDE hints
  • Application windows now cascade instead of piling on top of each if they do not have an explicit placement policy
  • Added /usr/include/X11 and /usr/lib/X11 symlinks
  • Menu in the Dock now shows a list of X11 windows.
  • Support for Copy & Paste working with other window managers.
  • No-click-to-focus option : “defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_ffm true”
  • Support for move window events from CodeTek's VirtualDesktop
  • Support to respect the Mac OS X's International keyboard mapping.
  • Keymappings from /System/Library/Keyboards.
  • Support for -iconic. E.g. xterm -iconic now puts the xterm into the Dock on launch.
  • New preference options to control xauth usage
  • Bug fixes and other feature enhancements

Hmmm... do you know if this is compatible with fink? I've been trying to get fink to install something and it complains that system-xfree86 is missing, but it won't go fetch it :?

Yes, it works great with fink. Make sure you also install the X11 SDK along with it (which has the headers), available on the same page with the Apple X11 download.

Just yesterday I compiled all of Gnome 2, xcdroast and filmGIMP using fink with Apple X11.

X11 Beta 3 released a few days ago (on the 17th):

New in X11 v0.3

  • Pseudocolor (8-bit) visual plane support
  • Option to quit X11 without presenting warning dialog
  • Command-Q keyboard shortcut to quit X11
  • Command-, to bring up preferences dialog
  • Keyboard mappings with dead keys fixed
  • Linking against libGL no longer results with multiple definitions of glGetColorTableEXT
  • Locked files left behind in /tmp no longer block non-admin users from starting X11
  • Windows can be resized by user to any size and not be limited by the Dock's height
  • Dragging remotely hosted windows no longer causes crash
  • Hardware accelerated scrolling in 16 bit mode now works
  • X Server no longer crashes if application tried to retrieve data back from the framebuffer using XGetImage
  • Bug fixes and other feature enhancements

...it just sounds more and more like a shiny new mac is in my future...

I gotta say, I'm very impressed with how Apple is embracing X on OS X and making sure it's a very useable portion of it all...mostly because that helps nail the geek market since they're advertising it (OS X) as having all the power of Unix and all...
