I'd recommend a Blue and White G3 to start out with. They can often be found quite inexpensively on ebay (avoid the 300Mhz version as it only has 512k of cache, unless you are going to upgrade to a faster proc). You may be able to get one for about $300-$350. They are the same Yosemite platform which was used in the first generation G4 boxes (the grey and white). They use regular PC100 SDRAM and standard IDE HD's. Most come with a Rage 128 video card which is not too bad. They have USB, Firewire and ADB conectors. Most of them also came with an Adaptec SCSI controller. They can also be upgraded easily to a G4. The only bad thing about these boxes is that they don't have an AGP slot. The fastest video card you can get is the Radeon Mac or the Radeon 7000 Mac PCI version.
Good luck.... :D

How about a first generation AGP 2x G4? That way you'd be able to use Quartz Extreme with a Radeon AGP card. I can't imagine they'd be too expensive these days.

I wasn't especially looking at Macs until OSX came out.

But now they use a Unix foundation combined with the legendary Apple look and feel, they have a great operating system for the future.

OS X is probably the first os I've felt comfortable using 'right out of the box', without any serious tweaks or modifications; just turn it on, give it a new wallpaper, and go. Of corse, I'm probably the exception here, but whatever..

A second generation G4 (first gen AGP) could be had for about $600 on ebay. A good deal if you were planning on upgrading a B&W G3.
A good place to always check is store.apple.com. They have a "Special deals" section where they sell refurb gear. I had purchased my Ti Powerbook (g4 450) for $1299 last year directly from Apple. :D
