I have 2 G5 Powers both running 10.6.(well the latest whatever version).
One has an AJA KONA Card with breakout box. I purchased a legit copy of the last compatible Final Cut version and it was great. The combination allowed you to stick a piece of burnt toast in the video input and pull out some sweet SD, it really was good.
I stopped using it of late since I had better control of my Discreet boxes input and didn't need the super conversion that the apple combination allowed.
A fine setup it was, and everything cost me combined less thank £100.

Well, you could spend thirty seconds with your favorite search engine and find several thousand programs that run great on a G5. You know, little-known ones like PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, Mickeysoft Word ... well hell, just about nothing, I guess. May as well throw it away, can't possibly do any kind of useful work on anything less than 64 gbytes of memory and a 16-core 5 ghz cpu. I mean, like your work is so demanding. I guess your after-hours job is doing cfd for Hyundai's shipbuilding division, down there in mum's basement. Right after you finish that free-energy magno-hepadynetic clostromotron that will power the planet on a single cup of peanut butter.

Oh wait ! I have an idea ! Let's put Loonix on it ! Loonix, the operating system that survives on one, count 'em ONE (semi) functional program ! Woo-hoo babe, now we're cookin' with gas ! Penis hard as a rock, stroke faster ! Squeeze harder ! Ooh ooh !

Shee-it. This is retarded. There is no consumer software, none, that actually needs or uses anything more capable than a G5. If this is your answer to "what can I do with a g5" then maybe you guys should get a job waxing cars. Maybe you could handle that.

Welcome back Hamei, haha.

The G5 does have its uses I'm just really apathetic towards them because of how unreliable the hardware is becoming over the years. The liquid cooled ones will all need overhauls several times over their lifetime. The air cooled ones sound like a cacophony of high powered hair dryers on cocaine.

For people who need Photoshop, final cut etc. It probably is great. But I usually am using Windows only programs like Vegas, and I game so Windows is the only game in town for that in particular. Plus I use 32GB of DDR3.

The G5 is great if you don't mind using OS X Tiger or Leopard and the problems that come with using that old of an OS. Running Linux on it is a waste of time. Running BSD is not good either. It's simply not worth it for me which is why I tried selling a dual CPU low end G5 and ended up using it as a target for my MAC-10 instead because it was essentially worthless.

Should have gutted it and sold it as a Hackintosh base instead...

The G5 isn't ATX form factor if I recall. Either way it was quite satisfying to destroy it with 200 rounds of .45ACP ammo out of a dual stage suppressed MAC-10, which belongs to a relative with a Class III FFL, so before anyone freaks out at me owning a machine gun it is 100% legal because it was done on an approved range with the owner of the gun right behind me.

I live in a rural area and I couldn't even give it away. In my entire county I'm the only classic computer collector it seems. People didn't want to drive down from Richmond, DC or Norfolk to get it so it got put full of holes.

I got mine from a nearby city from a guy who had several. Part of why I don't want to sell it is that I'll probably take a loss even though it's a very nice system and I only paid $100 for it.

Oh to live in a land like America.. The British equivalent of that would probably be in the region of 200,000 Air Riffle pellets and a bad case of RSI!!!

That sounds rather dangerous. I hope you have a license for the rifle and the plastic ammo. Ideally you should pick up your 'discharged' rubbish afterwards as is could be dangerous for the environment.

G5 sounds best in a landfill. It predates the whole 'content aware' craze in photoshop anyway :?

I always pick up my brass and luckily we don't require a license to own firearms, unlike the UK. For machine guns and short barreled guns you require a tax stamp of $200, plus an extensive six months background check. Plus they're dreadfully expensive, with a MAC 10 going for $5-7k on the market, and that's the low end.

So machine guns are a luxury few Americans can have.

Shooting on the whole isn't really my thing, but it certainly does have its charms. Last summer I went to a range with my brother and got to fire a Barrett M82 .50 caliber rifle. Only time I've ever experienced a frame-skip in real life. Time was neatly divided into two discrete halves - everything that happened before I pulled the trigger, and everything that happened after firing, with no transition between them :D

You just know you don't need a licence for an air rifle.. and as for guns.. everyone is packing round here.. from Farmers.. to Farmers wives.. :D

My ex gf is a diamond setter, and when she's doing deliveries she's frequently driving around with many thousands of dollars worth of diamonds and gold in her car. She's got a concealed carry permit and she never leaves her cave without it, a Sig Sauer P229, and she's good with it. Like, Tom Cruise in "Collateral" good...

Nice rant hamei, long overdue! Don't be a stranger now, y'heah?

No way a roll of toilet paper fits in that thing.
