I do have OS X Tiger on it but I was considering maybe trying MorphOS or some type of Linux?

MorphOS is interesting to play around with, for sure, although I'm not sure how stable the G5 version is (support for it was a pretty recent-ish addition, a couple years ago or so.) Linux on G5 wasn't great last time I tried it (though that was ~6 years ago.) In particular, if it's the late-model quad G5 with PCI Express video, support for the compatible video cards was spotty or nonexistent (plain framebuffer support on the nVidia card, no support at all for the ATI one.)

It's a dual processor, the last of the dual processor models. Video card is a Radeon 9650, I think.

Okay, that's a lot more viable. I had pretty decent-ish performance with a Radeon 96x0 something on a dual G5.

MorphOS 3.9 says it supports my G5 so I'll have to give it a try. It seems that all pre-PCI Express G5s are supported.

Looking at it broadly, there's the power required to mine the materials, melt them, make something meaningful out of them, ship them. After the machine is obsolete, a lot of power is required to disassemble them, recycle them, or carry them to the landfill. A lot of it is not recyclable either.

I'm sure there's a middle ground where he keeps the G5, takes care of it and keeps it out of the landfill and plays with it occasionally, but it isn't burning 300+ watts 24/7 to do the job that a <2 watt SOC could do better. Nobody was suggesting he throw it away but sell it to somebody else (TBF I suggested hanging up the logic board on the wall... but it's out of the landfill :P )

Few minutes (seconds?) instead of days!
We hire a dedicated engineering firm for FEA and stress analysis for the main reason that they have insurance and take liability for identifying design flaws. The expense is a pittance compared to the alternative should a disaster happen... although my solidworks reseller would love to get us a simulation license!

Or he could just sell it. It'll fetch some money he could use towards other ones and he'd facilitate keeping it from being binned

I'm not selling it. For one thing, I refuse to risk shipping it when I don't have the original box.

It is most definitely NOT going to a landfill, so there's no need to worry about that.

Linux support on the G5 is iffy at best. PowerPC big endian is being obsoleted, like Alpha was years ago in most distributions.

MorphOS is an interesting concept until you realize it lacks complete OpenGL support, lacks multiuser support, memory protection, modern filesystem and so much more we take for granted in a modern OS. On top of that it's not free of charge that stings.

You don't have to sell it. But I sold every G5 I've owned. Most of the time it's easy to sell them on CL because they have enough demand. If you reconsider selling it online it's easy to pack. Get some styrofoam insulation from Home Depot (Pink Panther kind is what I use) break it up using your knee and use 2-3 sheets to surround all the corners then pack newspaper, cardboard and other stuff like that into it.

I use bubble wrap for small items but for computers if you pack it properly it's not necessary.

Hmm, really? I hadn't kept up in quite a while. Looks like Debian doesn't even have big-endian 64-bit in the default install CDs, though 32-bit is still there. Looks like OpenBSD only supports the G5 in 32-bit mode, and I can't tell whether FreeBSD or NetBSD are any different.

It costs 100-150 euro per lifetime node-locked license.

MOS lacks drivers, applications and a lot of UNIX-ish stuff, but it doesn't lack a lib-X11 compatibility layer, which it is very slow and makes no sense, since the MUI stuff is more Amiga-like.

I can't stand this. What the fuck is wrong with you people ? "What can I do with a G5 ?"

Well, you could spend thirty seconds with your favorite search engine and find several thousand programs that run great on a G5. You know, little-known ones like PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, Mickeysoft Word ... well hell, just about nothing, I guess. May as well throw it away, can't possibly do any kind of useful work on anything less than 64 gbytes of memory and a 16-core 5 ghz cpu. I mean, like your work is so demanding. I guess your after-hours job is doing cfd for Hyundai's shipbuilding division, down there in mum's basement. Right after you finish that free-energy magno-hepadynetic clostromotron that will power the planet on a single cup of peanut butter.

Oh wait ! I have an idea ! Let's put Loonix on it ! Loonix, the operating system that survives on one, count 'em ONE (semi) functional program ! Woo-hoo babe, now we're cookin' with gas ! Penis hard as a rock, stroke faster ! Squeeze harder ! Ooh ooh !

Shee-it. This is retarded. There is no consumer software, none, that actually needs or uses anything more capable than a G5. If this is your answer to "what can I do with a g5" then maybe you guys should get a job waxing cars. Maybe you could handle that.

There's no harm in trying a G5. They seem to keep the value nicely, especially the late PCI Express models.
I'm quite confident I could get back the same 300 Euro I paid for it if I'd sell it on eBay.

@hamei: Oh wow.

There is no consumer DESKTOP software for linux. Well, there is, but it sucks!
