Xserve G5

Unread postby porter » Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:33 am

I've been waiting for a cheap G5 for quite a while and finally an Xserve cluster node with dual CPU popped up.

It's has no optical; but a Mini, a firewire cable and targetted disk mode sorted out that little problem and is now running OSX 10.5.8. Very neat little machine and can be very very loud when all the fans are full blast.

Hello world succesfully compiled and running with "gcc -arch ppc64".

Definitely a cool machine. Get some earplugs or noise canceling headphones...The Xserves make my Fuel sound like a Mini! :)

I'm glad you mentioned that, I too noticed the price drop recently and was considering getting one to mess around with.

Funny, I had one here for about 2 years, never did much with it. Maybe a year ago it was acting flaky (power off or reset during os install) I moved it and the found the PSU completely failed. Replaced said PSU but was mostly bored with it. Just sold it on craigslist to someone who needed to get his non cluster node working again. I have a feeling the cluster node and standard Xserve are the same from the back of the faceplate to the back.

I will say they are pretty machines and have pretty blinken' lights. True Green, Blue and White...

So when will the PATA drive modules become cheap? I need 10 and another FC cable for my Xserve RAID.

And how - I've slowly been adding drives to my Xserve RAID as I can find them at non-outrageous prices. I'm almost fully populated with 250G drives, but wish I could find a stash of cheap 400G drives.
