And that's why I'm a bit leery of being too cloud dependent. Between bankruptcy, buy and bury, and just plain old "we're tired of doing that/it's not making enough so we're stopping" things could get a bit ... irritating. Especially if you're depending on their middleware.
I think AAC/MP4 is probably pretty safe. It's been standardized, so once the patents run out it should be at least as common as MP3. My suspicion for the lack of use is licensing fees - everyone knows MP3, and what good would an "MP3" player be without MP3 support. MP4/AAC is another set of licenses that poeple aren't as likely to insist on.
The one that I don't understand is the minimal support of Ogg/Vorbis and FLAC outside the FOSS community. They're absolutely free standards and pretty good from what I've heard. I know MS and Apple have an interest in keeping things more proprietary, but there are a bunch of other player makers out there.
