Recommendations on OLD G4 AGP processor upgrade

Unread postby mnorton » Fri Apr 22, 2011 9:50 am

hi,

What is the most wicked thing I could do to an OLD G4 450 Mhz AGP that refuses to die?
Sugesstions? I am thinking about popping in a SATA controller and video card too.

Starting with the processor -how far can I go in speed with an upgrade and what are your recommendations?
Any other suggestions?

thanks

Mike

my g4 has a dual 500mhz so i'm sure it can do that.
adding a new agp video card may require the firmware to be made for a mac, so you need to watch for that when looking for a video card.
I've never tried a sata card, but you may need mac firmware on that too ( I have tried a pci-X scsi card and it wouldn't work with its standard firmware).

Make sure that your G4 is dual-capable before springing for a 2x upgrade, as Apple had to do a rev of at least one ASIC to get dual working on the first-gen AGP.

Some good info here: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G4ZONE/G4_du ... page1.html
and here: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/g4articles.html

I have a 733MHz CPU leftover from a Quicksilver upgrade, but if I've done my top-of-the-head math correctly unless you overclock it'd only run at 550MHz in your Sawtooth - hardly worth the trouble it'd take to shoehorn it in.

for processor upgrades, faster you can go is G4 7448 1.8GHz dual or 2.0GHz single.

edit: more stuff

video cards, get mac ones or flash your own PC cards:

notice that if want to keep macos9 accelerated, geforce4 ti is the most powerful one.

sata cards, just check for mac drivers/compatibility before buying.

This G4 is pre-dual capabilities. It would be a single processor sawtooth AGP???
I'll go check out the sites listed. Just curious how fast I could get the monster.
Would definitely need to get a fast video card too.

thanks.

For the amount of money it would take to get a real upgrade into that would be more worth it to get a more upgrade-capable G4 model but you could max out the ram and put a better IDE disk in for some much improved usability, having a high-density 7200RPM disk in my cube is like night and day compared to the old, slow, 5400RPM which was in it.

Based on ajerimez post, it may not be worth upgrading afterall. Dual proc G5 are affordable and in the price range too.
