ZFS default filesystem in Leopard?

Unread postby josehill » Sun Jun 10, 2007 10:32 am

Just noticed this...

Sun’s ZFS coming to Mac OS X by ZDNet's Dan Farber -- During a presentation yesterday in Washington D.C., Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz said his company’s open-source file system, ZFS, will be introduced into Mac OS X. ZFS, the 128-bit file system at the core of Sun’s Solaris operating system, will be come the default file system for the Mac OS X, Schwartz said...

It's funny, there are a lot of people on Ars and OSNews etc. saying that Apple can't do something like this without giving people time to migrate... completely forgetting that this is Apple. They can just say "NO MORE FLOPPIES" or "YOU WILL USE UNIX" and their users follow...

That being said, I wonder why they'd want to in this case.

Seems premature for the default FS..it would break so many things. I can it see it as a disk formatting option though.

I don't follow this, Mac OSX supports HFS, HFS+, UFS and FAT etc. what difference does another file system make?

BTW, after using HPUX and AIX I do like virtual file systems! :)

Supporting is one thing--getting apps to play nicely with them is another story. You wouldn't want to install Mac OS X on a fat filesystem. Even UFS breaks apps.

this just in. (not really, as I understand it it was released almost as soon as this hit the net) the statement was revised to be "zfs will be *A* apple FS" as in, there's freebsd support for it.

Almost what I just said. :D
Having it as a formatting option would be cool.

In fact, even making it the default for new, non-root FSes would be fine, IMHO.

ZFS looks pretty slick, overall. I'd love it if the various projects out there could just bury the licensing hatchet (dual-license or make special exceptions, say), then get support added to Linux, *BSD, maybe Haiku and Syllable, and hope IBM and HP pick it up into AIX and HP-UX. Would sorta-kinda maybe make sense for OpenVMS, too. Maybe someone could write an IRIX driver :P

Ugh- I'm not even a professional programmer and I shudder to think how much work would be needed to change a UNIX filesystem to support the needed VMS attributes and record-based nature.

Nah, no driver needed for Irix...our XFS is actually pretty good.

I wondered when the Apple rumor mill would reach the shores of Nekochan... ZFS seems like an obvious technical choice, at the very least the inspiration for, Time Machine. Also, there are rumblings on the 'net about a utility Apple is working on to do a live migration from one FS to another, in place. Now, without debating the technical merits of this feat, if anybody is going to do it and surprise the World + dog, Apple seems to be in the right place at the right time for it.

Anywho... none of this is certain until October unless one of you happens to be at WWDC and got one of the Developer's Release Leopard disks.

Apple does change major things around with abandon but no, some critical 3rd party apps do bork if put on a case sensitive filesystem, including the UFS included with OSX already.

Oddly enough I've also seen moving between UFS and HFS+ break shell scripts because of differing behaviour with newline characters.
