Fake Magsafe?

Unread postby guardian452 » Sat Mar 17, 2018 9:45 am

Bought a used MBP from a site called macofalltrades.com (model A1398, MacbookPro11,4). I needed a mac for a project, I didn't want a touchbar and I didn't want to play the ebay lottery.

It came with an 85w magsafe 2 power adapter of course, but I think it is counterfeit. I've had several MBPs and magsafes in my day but this is the first 85w MS2. (all of my other macs have been MS1 or 45-60w)

The indicator LED on the plug is off-center, it's off by a little more than the diameter of the hole, and also the amber light chip doesn't line up with the hole (the green one does). It seems un-apple-like, but I understand everything needs to be built to a cost and it's also possible that the clear light guide has been knocked out of position.

The rest of the machine is fine: flawless body and screen, and a new battery with apple RO for the battery.

I also find the clear film where the prongs go suspicious, I've never seen that on a brand new one. It's like the wrapper they put on the screens of cheap appliances.

Because this is the only MS adapter I have right now, I was wondering if somebody can look at the markings and compare it to their own MS2 adapter; tell me if Sir Ive is slipping in his old age and allowing off-center holes to be drilled.

Yes, that's exactly what the real ones look like. Mine has sightly different ID numbers but the ranges are close.
