QEMU/x86 on Loongson3

Unread postby shutitalldown » Wed Mar 21, 2018 8:04 am

Loongson3 is a MIPS64-bit/LE core enhanced by the addition of 200 instructions to help QEMU at emulating x86.
It's designed in China, not so used in Europe, neither I can't find feedback (written in English) from the real user experience.

Anyone here?

Loongson has come up periodically over the years, but when I've looked for the hardware - typically laptops - it's been tough to find. But I've only looked periodically, and not terribly hard.

Products did get made and shipped. Not sure what the current status is.

not so mature, judging by comments found around on internet

Yeah the Loongson/MIPS platform is not serious at all, and I doubt Qemu has actually been compiled for it to take advantage of the ISA and probably just is a straight port. As you know either the code or the compiler has to be aware.

it seems ... there is a problem with binutils.
So the foundations are not stable.
First milestone: fix it.

Once solved, glibc needs to be fixed.
Second milestone: recompile gcc.

Once done, it should start to be more interesting.

But, the problem with the new 200 new instructions seems hard to be integrated into the machine layer of gcc (v8?) in a short time.

Oh, it is.

However, you can't get any outside of China, if at all.

Yeah, it's downright bizarre how Loongson seems to be practically vaporware outside of China - even Chinese-based international sellers barely turn up anything.
