Holiday season hardware upgrades

Unread postby jimmer » Sat Dec 23, 2017 5:19 am

Hey All,

Frankenputer has seen some minor hardware upgrades this week.

After having its old Pentium D 915 @2.8Ghz replaced with a XEON X3220 @2.4Ghz a few months ago, yesterday it received a shiny new passively-cooled-thus-silent Nvidia GT1030 to replace the old noisy GT9500. Also, the full-height DVD burner was replaced with a new cheap-and-sort-of-nasty-mount-many-things-in-a-5.25-inch-bay unit which now holds a slot-loading slimline DVD burner and a 256Gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD, both from the parts bin. Finally, as the T-Base100 NIC on the Intel D946GZIS motherboard has proven to be painfully slow on the home network, I fitted a new T-Base1000 NIC and added the WiFi NIC from the parts bin.

The 13 quid for the XEON CPU and 6 quid for the T-Base1000 NIC was money well-spent. Spending 70 quid on a new but still slow GT1030 to upgrade my what-to-do-with-the-ye-olde-parts-peecee might not have been the besterest move performance-wise, but I'm loving the new near-silence of the current frankenputer incarnation.

I am probably posting from yangxiaolong, HP Z230 with Xeon E3-1245v3, 16GB RAM, GeForce 750ti, and running Xen on NetBSD dom0 with FreeBSD and Windows 8.1 Embedded.
