A snapshot of what you've got.

Unread postby Irinikus » Sun Oct 29, 2017 3:01 am

Most of us on this forum have signatures to show others the various systems that we have in our inventories, but there is no place on the site for members to show others, pictures of their actual systems at a glance.

After reading the discussion regarding the fact that the gallery has gone and noting that it was mentioned that it would be nice if members could show off the actual systems shown in their signatures, I decided to make up a single image containing all of the systems in my collection as of 29th October 2017.

I think it would be great if other members do the same! :D

These snapshot images could be updated over time as our inventories and signatures change, easily allowing members to show others the system's they have at any particular time.

You can create a link to the image that you post in this thread and attach it to your signature, allowing others to see a snapshot of your actual collection from your signature. :D

Let me just state from the get-go, that this should not be a discussion were people attack each other due to differences of opinion!

You have a nice collection there, but what do you have plugged in and on the go?

I generally don’t keep an SGI machine set up all the time, if I want to use a particular machine, then I set it up.

Once I have all of the SGI machines I want (only three more to go), then I will go through the process of acquiring a whole lot of SGI monitors and peripherals, so that they can be set up on a permanent basis.

I will also have to move them to my apartment in Pretoria, where I currently work, as I have the space here!

A while ago I released a Lab Tour video:

I present to you: cool stuff mixed with useless stuff mixed with boring stuff arranged by time of acquisition and frequency of access, and only I know where anything is but I inexplicably do :D !

Non-working Fuel. Fuel and Onyx in the same room is like the perfect pair of unreliable SGIs.

Laptops. Lots and lots of laptops. I should get back to fixing and selling these.

At least they're labeled (sometimes).

Why is some of this guff here?

That's some of it. There is plenty more cool or totally mundane stuff, but it's where my biggest SGIs are as well as some other neat things like my 701c.

Again, Dodoid, you have very loving parents...
I'd be greeted by the belt of justice in a second if I'd leave such mess behind.

I'll get a photo of my setup done in a few days and share. No SGI yet, though. =\

Most of my gear is visible in my "computer room" thread : viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16726133&start=90#p7360587

Desk area is a bit more crowded these days, with the Fuel next to the Fuel and a pair of 27" screens on the desk itself.

On the right hand side of my desk there's usually a "project" machine in bits, right now that's that Indigo2 Impact I picked up recently.

I'm slowly trying to clear out the storage space I occupy in the attic. That means I take some boxes downstairs, sort them out, test everything and keep only relevant spare parts. We're talking about several cubic meters, so that's going to take time, and while I'm doing it it's a mess.

To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. (IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report)

You have an awesome collection which is beautifully presented! No doubt, one of the best around, all considered (quantity and quality)!

Absolutely awesome!

Definitely something to aspire to! :D

Among the SGIs, probably the Origin since it's right under my main desk and connected to my desktop via a serial port, or the Octane in the basement. The Origin will be getting a video on my channel soon, as will the Onyx once it works. I will have to experiment to find out how to film such enormous machines.

The bedside O2 works, but I haven't gotten around to installing IRIX due to being busy with a ton of other stuff lately, so it doesn't see as much use as I wish it did. My typical bedside machines are my GPD Pocket and (rarely) my Hackintoshed ThinkPad X220.

The Fuel has graphics now but it still doesn't boot, pending diagnosis (christmas break? IDK). That would be a neat main SGI to have.

Most of the less interesting machines in that room (like the random Vaios all over the floor, the netbook pile, at least 2 of the iMacs, the PowerBooks, etc.) are just waiting to be sold. I don't really have much of a need for more than a few older PCs, and PPC macs are neat but not really something I can do videos on given how much competition there is in the "PowerPC Mac Video" viewership space.

SGIs have been a highly successful niche for my channel, and I plan to keep doing videos on them forever. Even if my channel eventually becomes popular off of something non-SGI (which, IMO, is unlikely given that most other types of computer have done to death), I will always have new SGI videos coming out and old ones available to watch.
