Shock indeed! I didn't even get my eBay alert message for "BeBox" or "Be Box"!

Doesn't look like all of the systems were complete. If they were, $3000 would be quite a steal. As it is, you might be able to get a couple systems out of what was there.
smit happens.

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Different question: what can you do with BeBox(BeOS @ PPC)?

There aren't many things built for PowerPC BeOS. There's a fair bit for x86, but PowerPC got unloved even though BeOS could run on many contemporary Power Macs.

I've tried porting a few things, and some work (I have a 133MHz BeBox). Mine came with the Metrowerks compiler and I was able to build some command line tools, but I haven't tried to build a full-blown BeOS app with it yet.

Obviously the situation is even worse if you have a grey Hobbit-based prototype.

What's the difference between BeOS for bebox and powermac?

The OS was basically the same, but the BeBox had some special peripherals ("GeekPort") and always booted directly from OpenFirmware. On The PowerMac, you could boot from a launcher application on the Mac side, like you could for MkLinux.

From ROM, rather. There was no OpenFirmware on BeBoxens.

I wanted one for a while but I no longer want one. I do want to know, how many of the Hobbits survived.

Hmm, weird. I always thought they were PReP/CHRP machines.

The BeBox hardware is PReP, but the firmware in ROM, not being OpenFirmware, is obviously not PReP-compliant.

Exactly that makes the point.
The C/C++ compiler (BeOS is mainly written in C++) is a MUST have!

Lucky you are :)
