Compare firmware Symbios SYM8750SP

Unread postby bjornl » Mon Dec 26, 2016 9:37 am

Hi,
I wonder if anyone here knows the best (easiest) way to compare firmware from two Symbios SYM8750SP SCSI cards.
I haven't found any special firmware software on LSI homepage. Is there a way to do this with Linux or something?

I have two of these sitting in a milling machine with a PC based controlsystem. It is built with two PCs talking to each other over SCSI
and I have a random communications error which stalls my machine from time to time.
One PC is running special DOS software talking to the PLCs, the other PC runs Windows 2000  which is the GUI and does all calculations.

For this machine there are three possible SCSI cards. Older SYM8750SP, newer SYM8750SP and LSI20160. I have tried the two SYM versions,
but want to try the LSI to see if my error dissappears. Unfortunately there are no spare parts and they are no longer in production.

A machine technician claims they have customized firmware, "so you can't go and buy one on the internet". My guess he is just trying to
sell me another type of upgrade which costs about 8000EUR + installation. I'd rather spend 80EUR on eBay and call his bluff :-) .

So I want to see if he is telling me the truth and test the cards I have by extracting their firmware and compare to a stock SYM8750SP.
Too many SGI's (says wife)

Is this deep enough information for at least to compare the firmwares?
http://www.pcitree.de/screenshots.html

It runs from NT 4 up.

Is there a firmware update tool you can use to save the existing firmware? that's what I'd do.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I have downloaded the pcitree software and found a firmware update tool.
I had only looked for firmware update for the oldest SYM cards since I already have them, but it turned out they are now calling them LSI8750.
When I changed my search from SYM or SYMBIOS to LSI, I found something I think will work.
It seems like it is the same firmware for SYM8750 as LSI20160 . I guess they are based on similar chips.

Next step is to set up an old DOS machine and start testing :-)

Bought a SYM8750SP on eBay today. Same firmware version as my older cards according to the stickers.
The sticker says 4.11 on my card and 4.11.00 on eBay card. I hope it means the same.

It is version 4.16.00 on my newer card, but I can't find anything older than 4.19.00 on LSI homepage.
The waybackmachine (archive) don't have any binaries saved (that I can find).

Does anyone here have any idea where to find 4.16.00 for download?
